Any nutritionists or similar here? DD's nursery changing the way they feed them and I'm NOT happy... (and how does YOUR nursery do it?)

DD goes to a lovely little nursery, they have always had a chef on site who produces fresh cooked lunches for them every day, they have a good varied menu, use a lot of organic food, everyone very happy.

The owners have acquired 2 new nurseries in Guildford area (we are in London nr Richmond). They have decided to employ the chef they have now plus another and base them in Guildford in a bigger kitchen, then cook all the food there and transport to the nurseries in heated vans.

I am very miffed about this, surely the food will lose nutrients between Guildford and London. What if there is a traffic jam? It could be in there for hours. It can't be as good for them as cooking on site can it?

As she has a good hot lunch currently + light tea at nursery, I only give her a very light supper at home. Am tempted to say I will give her packed lunches if they persist with this approach and then give her a good fresh homecooked meal in the evening (she is picked up at 4pm so plenty of time)

Does anyone have any opinions on this? How do other nurseries do this?

(not so much because of loss of nutrients, just the texture which imo suffers when food kept hot for too long)

Uwila · 05/04/2006 14:52

I don't actually think the nutritional value of the food is going to go down all that much (assuming the operate with in applicable health and safety guidelines). I just think they are messing you around to increase their profits. And so I think you should mess them around a bit to ensure the quality of the service which you are paying for. Are my Chicago roots showing?

Also, I'd be more concerned that this is a sign of things to come than I would about the actual decline in food quality.

We have our own drivers to deliver our products around London and outer London. We deliver to restaurant and always try to be on time (no deliveries at lunch time)but as you may know the traffic is sometimes horrendous and our driver would deliver the goods exactly at the wrong time!!! My point is I would be more worried of my child to not get her food when food should be served??? Do they have a 2nd plan of action if the food get ruined, if the van break down, if the traffic is bad???
I think your idea of the pack lunch and nice warm dinner at home seem to be the perfect idea!

bump for any nutritionists back from work

where in London is it.... i know i can get (using A3) my house to guildford in 45 mins.... my house to charges grannies in fulham / chelsea london in 1 hour 15, so that guildford to fulham bit is 30 mins. (thats in good traffic... not 1st thing in the morning when you can double or even triple time into london! Shock)

at lunch time i would expect a quick journey cause its hardly peak time.

Depends where in London you are... i dont know London well at all, but IF you were near Mordon (where we park for the tube when goin up) than TBH i think that does sound a bit preciouse and OTT.... just my opinion tho

NannyL · 05/04/2006 19:36

off course that only passes past guildford ratehr than driving into it

bubble99 · 05/04/2006 19:50

CD. Are they planning to transport all of the food from Guildford?? Of course it can be done safely, I see meals on wheels vans whizzing around all day, but it is quite a schlep form Guildford to your DD's nursery, even with good traffic.

I imagine a lasagne would do OK but I can't see how vegetables would be even remotely tempting.

Could they not transport a chilled lasagne, for example, for the staff to bung in the oven? Are the staff going to prepare veg to go with whatever it is??

CountessDracula · 05/04/2006 22:59

It is near Richmond

I don't know until I go to the meeting tomorrow what is to be transported, I guess everything

So, how was it?

CountessDracula · 06/04/2006 22:40

Bloody fantastic!

They have apologised unreservedly (the owners) for the lack of consultation and have promised not to be so norty in future

They are reverting to cooking the food at the nursery, on site, plus improving the menu

Behold, the power of the pitchfork. Grin

CountessDracula · 06/04/2006 22:48

Yes, I sharpened it and put my floppy straw hat on...

seriously though, they apologised immediately and said that if at the end of the meeting with a show of hands that we were still not happy they would revert.

Apparantly everyone had complained, one chap even said he had decided to take his ds out, had gone to visit the Asquith nursery and suddenly realised how truly fantastic ours is... Grin

I'm really pleased that you've got this sorted. Good old Asquith, eh?! Always there for a handy unfavourable comparison.

CountessDracula · 06/04/2006 22:58

I've never been to one so can't comment really!

Fantastic news! Amazing what an angry mob with pitchforks can achieve! (Shame there wasn't a castle involved, and a man with a swirly black cloak....[drifts off into the Buffyverse])

CountessDracula · 06/04/2006 23:01

Bettys you would have been proud of me!
I am so chuffed
