bank messed up my account, help me feed 4 with £24!!

MerlinsBeard · 04/04/2006 10:04

Banks computer just decided to reduce my overdraft so the £72 worth of shopping i had ordered to be delivered today won't be because i have £24 to spend.

They are looking into it and ringing back later on. meantime i need to go and get some bits before lunch as my cupboards and fridge are literally empty. (defeats the object of internet shopping if i have to walk a mile to the nearest shop with baby and toddler in tow Angry)

Any ideas what i can get that will last me as long as poss? I have a coup[le of things in the freezer but nothing that will make a meal. I also need nappies and sainsburys ones (my nearest shop) aren't strong enough to hold my youngests wee, eldest will have to become night trained when his pull ups run out.

So (sorry to ramble) help me out! my toddler won't eat pasta/rice/eggs,

Do you need someone to lend you some money until next week or something?

Details please.

You can shove it on my cc if I will get paid back.

Now I may regret this, am sleep deprived, do not take advantage of me in this state.

ItalianJob · 04/04/2006 10:07

b$gger. It's horrible when you're stressing over being able to afford to buy food.

what about spagbol or chilli con carne - if the toddler will have that, she can have it with bread instead of pasta rice. You can get a big load of mince, and make double portions?

otherwise - beans on toast, peanut butter sandwiches, cheese sandwiches, jacket potato with tuna and sweetcorn.

does it have to be sainsbury's you go to? as tescos do more value lines IIRC.

ItalianJob · 04/04/2006 10:10

whole chickens are on bogof at tesco atm.

MerlinsBeard · 04/04/2006 10:11

i don't know when or if i can pay back but ty for ur kind offer oliveoil, it was lovely.

ds1 (the toddler) won't eat chilli, nothing spicy. i could go to tesco but it means 2 buses and could do with the £3 to go on food!! will just have to get loads of cheapo mince and super cheap potatoes. i do double up where i can but we have eaten the doubles already!!

well, i could do with losing a few pounds. (trying to find something funny or i will cry :( )

what size nappies do you need? we buy in bulk from costco, i can send you a pack or two.....

oliveoil · 04/04/2006 10:13

Offer still stands, I have just been paid.

As long as you don't take the piss and mess about, bad karma will abound otherwise.

I have to go and do some work now, will check later.

xx

alexsmum · 04/04/2006 10:16

mom try things like lentils- cooked and mixed with tomatoes etc into a bolognese the kids won't know the difference.cheap and healthy.
buy a whole chicken and roast it. you'll get a dinner off it, cold cuts tomorrow and then make soup with it.the soup can be thickened with rice and veggies and will make a substantial lunch.

rummum · 04/04/2006 10:17

ahh.. bless you oliveoil

MerlinsBeard · 04/04/2006 10:18

i have to go to the shops, can't wait any longer i still haven't had breakfast and am starving!

Thank you for your replies.

Mazzystar, we use size 4s but i don't want to take ur nappies (if u have the right size) in case the bank can't sort out and i am living with the bare minimum nappies for quite a while. Thank you very much tho :)

wow MN is not always nasty :)

have you any oats? if you do buy mince, then add a handful of oats to the mince as you cook it. bulks it up and makes it stretch further.

can you tell my mum was skint when we were little?

katzg · 04/04/2006 10:19

have you cancelled your online shop?

if not then you just need to find the £48 difference between what you have ordered and what you need.

I'm happy to donate £10, do you have paypal?

are there any vouchers you can use to decrease the total amount of your shop?

is it with tesco?

alexsmum · 04/04/2006 10:19

mom, good luck. go for a smuch in the way of veggies as you can-cheaper and can still make good meals with it.

Uwila · 04/04/2006 11:27

Look here for tesco vouchers tescovouchercodes.blogspot.com/

Uwila · 04/04/2006 11:30

If you have paypal and you send me a bill, I'll give you £10 as well.

Otherwise, beans are a good idea. And, you can add oatmeal to mince? That's a fab idea for my cholesterol lowering mission. Do you add the oats dry,or mix water with them? More details please!

MadameDeMars · 04/04/2006 11:35

I'm happy to send you a tenner as well! Smile Mars

LadySherlockofLGJ · 04/04/2006 11:36

Where do you live MoMonsters ?

essbee · 04/04/2006 11:56

Wow aren't you lot lovely! I really can't afford to lend you atm, would have done if I could've!

What you can do though is get Nappies from poundland or equiv, not the best but 'ok' and obvs LOADS cheaper.

Go veggie! I rarely eat meat and I feed the 3 of us for around £20-30 a week, every week. Dried soya is really cheap (about 50p a pack) and will last 2 meals and is a great form of protein as are dried beans/pulses. I know it's hard if your children are fussy (i'm lucky and mine aren't at all generally). Another great place to shop is Asda's or tesco's. Did you know tesco's sell packs of fishfingers for 18p!!! OK so they're not organic and might not be the best bits of fish but again they're perfectly edible and CHEAP! Hth!

wilbur · 04/04/2006 11:56

Yup, def add oatmeal to mince - I make burgers with a mince/oatmeal mix and they are v good.

mumofmonsters - onion soup with a bit of bread and cheese on top is dead cheap and yummy. You can add lentils or barley to the soup to make it more substantial, barley is usually an easier sell to kids than lentils.

If you can manage a decent lunch, remember that porridge is always an option for tea, ditto pancakes.

Hope you get your account sorted soon.

essbee · 04/04/2006 11:58

Oh and I forgot to add, write a list when you go shopping!! Or better still send someone else so you can't be tempted to buy stuff you don't need!

Piffle · 04/04/2006 11:59

I'm also happy to donate some dosh, or help pay for an online shop
If you'r near me sing out

mazzystar · 04/04/2006 12:12

milward · 04/04/2006 12:17

Try couscous grains - mix with some butter ketchup or tomato sauce & cheese - plus anything else you have. My kids love this plus cheap to buy & cook as only need hot water for the grain & veg.

cori · 04/04/2006 12:23

I also have a pakcet of size 4+ nappies you can have. DS doesnt wear nappies any more, ( and dont like throwing money away) Email asap if you want them, going out in an hour. [email protected]

Bugsy2 · 04/04/2006 12:44

Think your best bet is a big bag of spuds & a loaf or two of bread.
Big lump of cheapest cheese you can get.
Pork is usually cheaper than beef or chicken.
Baked beans are always good for extra carbs & proteins & they are cheap.
Root veg keep longest & are usually higher in carbs than other veg.
I've got a few pull ups left over which I'm happy to post to you. email me on [email protected] with your address & I'll post them to you.
