How do some parents afford to give their kids packed lunches?

What I mean is, some of the kids at school have all the latest mini packaged things in their lunch.... a pack of mini pringles, philadelphia cheesecake dip things, innocent smoothies. Some of the lunches I've seen must cost well in excess of £2 a day, which is a lot don't you think?
What happened to making a nice ham/cheese sarnie, and sticking an apple and a digestive biccie in there with a bottle of water or juice?

sandwich, apple and biscuit would have my DS coming home starving Shock!

(they probably buy most of the stuff in the cheap shops - Wilkinsons, 99p etc etc Grin)

I shops in Iceland for all my children's packed lunch items - the shop can't be beaten on prices!!The yogurts and mini pringles are especially cheap there too!

get one pack of mini pringles. then buy them in bulk in costco and refill the mini pringle container.

well maybe a bit more than sandwich, apple and biscuit but you know what I mean!!!

I actually would happily spend £2 a day on my ds's lunches - if he's eat more than a sparrow for lunch.

After all I's spend that on a coffee in a cafe

I think there are lots of ways to do this cheaply and something I will have to think about for Sept.

Mini Sausages
sandwiches
homemade cake
homemade biscuits
fruit

i do see your point though. Seems v expensive.

my Mum used to give DB sandwich spread sandwiches EVERY DAY for his packed lunch til he got on his knees and begged for no more as he HATED the stuff but didnt want to upset her!!

Some of it's peer-pressure, some of it's 'clever' marketing.

I did a link on another thread re packed lunches. It was mainly about nutrition but also gave prices = I'll see if I can find it.
