Christmas Eve dinner

Hi everyone. Looking for something that I can make in advance or that is very quick to serve on Christmas Eve for 5 adults and 2 children.

We go to a Christingle service at the church at 3 and get home around 4.30. Would like to eat about 6 so its not too late for the children.

Last year I got a pie from the butchers which was lovely but I wondered if anyone had any good ideas, festive or not. I was thinking of doing Nigellas pear and chocolate pudding, any good? Thanks!

That's fair enough thenSmile. We were thinking of doing prawn cocktail (i know, I know, but its one of my faves) or soup as starters but your Christmas Eve tea does sound yummy too.

I'm thinking either a slow cooker dish or a steak with chips....something with minimum fuss.

MummyPig24 · 06/11/2012 10:38

Thanks for all the ideas everyone! Like the slow cooker idea, although I'm finding whenever I cook beef in it it goes dry?

I used to find that too mummypig so I try to seal it before I pop it in and seems to stop it going tough

Am trying out a beef recipe on Thursday will let you know how it goes - my slow cooker skills are still in their infancy.

Hot roast ham sandwiches yum yum
DH's tradition, but it is lovely. Shove it in the oven hours and hours before, buy fresh crusty bread and it's delicious. It also means there's some leftover ham!

storminabuttercup · 07/11/2012 19:34

Ham here too. DS And DP go to DPs mothers for a party, I usually have a glass of wine with my mum and then home for ham sandwiches for me, they have normally eaten at the party.

I would love a Xmas eve tradition meal but it wouldnt be allowed Sad

Nigellas aromatic ham joint from her Christmas book with slimming world chips!

I don't buy an expensive one ,just one shrink wrapped at the supermarket .ive had this 2 Xmas Eve's on the trot now and it's delish.

Catholic here and have always had shepherd's pie. Can be made in advance, bungee in the oven whilst doing last minute jobs and well, shepherds, you see! Grin

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles · 08/11/2012 06:34

Bunged, obviously.

Lifeisontheup · 08/11/2012 07:22

Rudolphs Pie which is shepherds pie made with minced venison and pork. It's lovely and can be made and frozen in advance. You may not want to call it that until DC's are older though Grin unless you have a heartless lot like mine.

We live near the coast so I order some crabs and lobster from a local fisherman and get some smoked salmon from the smokehouse.
