Help! DS spitting everything out!

DS is 9 months & until recently has been a fantastic eater. BUT, 3 weeks ago started spitting everything out. I thought it could be down to 3 things:

  1. He had a cold - stuffy nose
  2. He was trying to assert himelf
  3. Was bored of the food

So, tried some new recipes, gave him plenty of finger food, loaded up the spoon for him to do it himself, praised loads when he took a mouthful...
This lasted about 10 days & eventually he went back to eating well again.

However, he has started again. He has hardly eaten anything today & I've spent ages clearing up the mess! He does have a cold & cough again so it could be linked - I just don't know.

Has anyone else had similar experiences? Any advice gratefully accepted!!!!

kids eat more some days than others, if you make too much of an issue of it he'll start to associate meals with fights. just let him eat as much as he wants, don't offer any more snacks than usual in between and just do the same at his next meal. he'll eat what he needs. the amount of fooda baby actually needs is quite small and sometimes as parents we have a tendancy to want them to eat as much as we do.

don't panic, he won't starve!

Thanks Eve. Am also worried because he dropped on his centile graph at the clinic last week - which I put down to the previous bout of spitting out. Don't want him to waste away!!

What suggestions are there to what my reaction should be when he spits? - ignore? Say 'NO'?????

my 13 month old goes through phases of this.
He eats better if I give him a spoon and he plays with the food with it and I spoon-feed him at the same time.

if he is spitting every mouthful out then I get him down from the table

just wanted to add that along with a cough and cold he may also have a sore throat and not feel like swallowing the food. Is he drinking more? Maybe make it slighlty sloppier so it is easy to get down him?
Hope he is eating again soon. Your DS is the same age as mine, and the breakie my DS loved the other week and ate endlessly is now not liked! He prefers my cinnamon grahams! Shock [bad mother badge for letting him eat a couple]Grin
HTH!

i ignore it, soetimes i can't help but laugh! i find alot of the time there's alot less food on the ground after than i originally served so alot goes i without you noticing.

as for weight gain, my dd shot up to the 95th cantile at 8 months and has hardly put on weight since, she had a health check yest and was pronounced perfect size and weight for her age!

Thanks Mamatuks. I wondered that about his throat - so tried weetabix with lots of yoghurt thinking it would be nice & cool on his throat but he didn't want to know.

We are going to a 'kids-free' wedding next week - DS will be the only child there. I was already feeling the pressure, but he can't sit at the table with other guests & spit food all over them!!
