Started a split pea soup in the slow cooker. Lovely colour, good texture. Coming along nicely. Bit bland though. What seasoning?

Bay Leaves and thyme

Mint and some grated apple to give it a 'lift'.

Mace or nutmeg and then finish off with bacon. Yummy!

Some very different responses. It's got some thick cut bacon in it. Tempted by the spice but also by the more traditional bay leaves. Will go and taste again.

If it's got bacon, why not go for some bay leaves, oregano and a little bit of chopped sundried tomato to give it a bit more 'meatiness'?

(I'm veggie, so was basing my first comment on a soup I made some time ago, but sundried toms are quite succulent and add depth to flavour)

I have done thyme, marjoram and salt and pepper. Have no sundried tomatoes. Would ordinary ones work? Or would they just add a sort of sliminess?

I don't think ordinary would have the same effect - if you have tomato puree you could try that, but to be honest, the herbs sound pretty good as they are. :)

It's tasting better already. Thanks everyone.

Totally delicious. Have eaten two bowls. Anyone want some?

I like the idea of ginger and nutmeg and all those sort of North African flavours. I think I might go with that next time.
