The butcher inspired me to cook a gammon joint.

So I have this lovel looking joint... What do I do?

Chuck it in slow cooker, with what? He said just water.... But that sounds borring and bland?

Gammon is pretty flavoursome, especially if it's smoked, because it contains a lot of salt and fat. I find it doesn't need a lot of extra flavours... a bayleaf or two, a cinammon stick, some peppercorns. My tip... after it has finished cooking, allow it to cool in the liquid for quite some time before carving. This allows the juices to stay in the meat rather than run out. Other tip... don't attempt to use the salty juices for anything.

water is fine and stops it being too salty. though apple juice is good.

I did one last week.

I use water, mixed spice and a bay leaf. Sometimes just a can of coke. I have a craving now!

I have cooked gammon with a few tablespoons of water in the slow cooker then 30min or so before serving put it in the oven with a honey and mustard glaze. You can also cook a gammon joint from frozen straight into the slow cooker that was a tip from MIL. I forgot to get it out the night before, it was a meal for them !! could have been a disaster Blush

No water, just bung it as it is. Thats how I always do it!

OnlyWantsOne · 18/10/2012 14:40

Shall do it with a can of coke then ;)

A bottle of cider or a bottle of full fat. i just leave it on medium for hours until it looks right. It's an excellent way of cooking it as it is much more moist than in an oven

YouOldSlag · 18/10/2012 14:45

full fat coke

OnlyWantsOne · 18/10/2012 14:46

What would you serve it with?

How much coke? 1/2 cover it?

I do mine with a quarter pound of brown sugar and a little bit of water turning the joint over a few times during cooking.

YouOldSlag · 18/10/2012 15:52

Me and Nigella pour a whole 2 litre bottle over it. (She's not with me when I do it, sadly, or I'd make her do a sticky toffee pudding as well)

She also does a version with cherry coke which I imagine works quite well.

OnlyWantsOne · 19/10/2012 09:45

Well it's in. With te coke :)

Is this a boned joint, or just a gammon from the supermarket?

OnlyWantsOne · 19/10/2012 10:02

It's a rolled joint from butcher. No bone.

LulaPalooza · 21/10/2012 14:07

Oooh ginger beer sounds fab! I've done the Nigella coke recipe a few ties. It's lovely.
