DS has friends coming for tea - sandwiches OK?

My ds is a very faddy eater. He has 3 friends comin g for tea today and since I am sick of meal times battles, I am starting to feed him what he eats to alleviate any negative vibes at meal times. I especially want him to enjoy his play date with it being at his house. So this morning I asked him what I should serve and he has requested sandwiches.

Would you be a bit miffed though if your child went to a play date and got fed sandwiches?

I'll do chicken sandwiches on wholemeal bread and also serve some cut up carrot, cucumber and cheese cubes.

What do you reckon?

Sounds fine to me.

SoupDragon · 27/03/2006 12:55

Depends if the children had a school dinner or not. If my child had only eaten sandwiches at lunchtime I'd be a little miffed but not overly so.

RTKangaMummy · 27/03/2006 12:55

Will they have had a cooked school lunch or just sandwiches?

How old are they?

SoupDragon · 27/03/2006 12:55

(I tend to write off the mealtime of a playdate anyway!)

Ledodgy · 27/03/2006 12:57

I agree with Supdragon if they have a proper meal in the day then fine,if not I would feel it wasn't very substantial but ok I suppose for a one off.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 27/03/2006 12:57

sounds okayish but i would do a small buffet type thing
with pizza slices
sausage rolls
pots of yoghurt
and butties
so they can pick what they like

Ledodgy · 27/03/2006 12:57

*soupdragon

Hulababy · 27/03/2006 12:57

Sounds fine by me. Has meat, carbs and veggies, and is healthy and if they eat it all it is filling too.

alexsmum · 27/03/2006 12:57

got to say i would usually provide a proper meal because by the time they get home it'll probably be too late for them to then have a meal.
could you maybe do chicken on pitta with healthy chips or something.still got the sandwich elelment but a bit more substantial?

Northerner · 27/03/2006 12:57

One is at school so will have had a hot meal, one is 4 and at nursery so may have had a packed lunch. The other is nearly 3.

Won't the peer pressure get him to eat different stuff anyway?????

LadyTophamHatt · 27/03/2006 12:58

I would find it a bit odd but wouldn't be miffed.

The usual pladate food is fish fingers/sausages or something so it's better than that.

Senoracod · 27/03/2006 12:58

yes giev em fish fingers

MamaG · 27/03/2006 12:59

I think it sounds ok. DesparateScouseWife's idea is good, nobody could moan that at - and perhaps if your DS sees his friends tucking into other food, he might join in?

I always like my DD to have a "proper" dinner as she has packed lunch at school, but I don't mind butties for dinner occasionally, esp if she has friends round.

Northerner · 27/03/2006 13:00

You think fish fingers will be better? He'll eat those.

Hulababy · 27/03/2006 13:00

LadyTophamHatt - what I was going to add too :) Better than nuggets and chips type which is often often instead.

I am starting to realise more that a meal doesn't always have to be hot to be healthy and substatial :)

You could add some home mad epotato wedges if you wanted.

Or add fruit and yogurt for a dessert. Or a bit of chocolate Grin

Hulababy · 27/03/2006 13:01

I persoanlly think the chicken and vbread is a healthier option to fishfingrs, and as substantial. DD eats both though, so would be fine either way.

Senoracod · 27/03/2006 13:05

i dont htink northerneer is tryiong to change a nations eating habits
btu you ddont want to let other parents thoink thatt heir kdis dont egta proepr meal there.

zippitippitoes · 27/03/2006 13:07

sandwiches are a "proper" meal though aren't they?

My grandma wouldn't have thought so, but if she was still alive she would be 104.

I agree. Don't see why a proper meal has to mean hot.

I served a cold chicken and salad with bread yesterday for the main meal, with family round. It was very substantial!

dinosaure · 27/03/2006 13:11

To be perfectly honest I would think it a bit odd if DSs weren't offered a hot meal, but I can't claim any particularly rational basis for my view!

I think desperateScousewife's idea is good.

Ledodgy · 27/03/2006 13:13

Why not serve chicken with salad and potato wedges with bread on the side as this gives the illusion of a meal so they don't just go home and say they've had sandwiches iyswim.

hunkermunker · 27/03/2006 13:16

Fishfingers aren't evil though.

Not like chicken nuggets or squash Wink

Hulababy · 27/03/2006 13:19

I agree fishfingers aren't that bad. However chicken is better!

When DD has friend's round we often do a rainbow platter (so named after Katz's household :) ). We have q big serving platter and include loads of different things such as meat, cheese cubes, peppers, cucumber, tomatoes, sweetcorn, celery, and dsome slices of bread or pitta. Children then help themseves.
