I just eat it from the jar with a spoon. That is probably NOT it's whole life's purpose.
Any idea, please

When I first had it in Mexico the family I was with had it on toast. It was a bit much first thing but this is the country where Coca Cola is made especially sweeter!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 16/10/2012 23:09

Very nice on the top of a vanilla cheesecake.

MmeLindor · 16/10/2012 23:11

Spread on bread like Nutella.

Spoonful in coffee is sublime.

I made banana and dulce la leche cupcakes with caramel and lime icing. Sublime, they were.

NorksAreMessy · 16/10/2012 23:11

So if I put it on toast it is CLEARLY better for me than eating it with a teaspoon. Sort of like Nutella?

Norks
I am not sure if I still have it - might be in the still in storage stuff. Will look when I get home to Scotland next week. I only made them once for some stupid reason.

MmeLindor · 17/10/2012 09:48

oh, I remember - getting dulce de leche was tricky in Switzerland, so I only managed them once.

RamblingRosa · 17/10/2012 09:53

In Argentina - which is where I think it comes from - they eat use it in all sorts of desserts, kind of how we use jam. So it's often a filling in cakes or biscuits. They put it on pancakes. They spread it on toast.

My preferred way of eating it is with a spoon Blush

IShallCallYouSquishy · 17/10/2012 09:54

I use it for caramel cupcakes. Yummy!

ShirleyRots · 17/10/2012 09:56

I made a chocolate eclair cheesecake out of it. Bloody hell.

MoreBeta · 17/10/2012 09:57

It is definitley a South and Central America thing. I first came across it in Argentina where our hosts seemed to serve Dulce de Leche cakes at tea time every day along with Matte tea which is mildly narcotic.

showtunesgirl · 17/10/2012 09:59

It's not so sweet if you get it with added sea salt. I have that and I have it on top of my ice cream that's served next to fresh walnut brownies. Grin

ObiWan · 17/10/2012 10:02

When I'm feeling grown up, I use it in banoffee pie (I'm afraid of exploding cans).

When I want nursery food, I pour it into a pastry case, scatter sprinkles over the top, and serve it luke warm, like the primary school puddings we used to have.

HazeltheMcWitch · 17/10/2012 10:04

It's SO good, isn;t it? It's eaten throughout central and south america, in all sorts of ways as Rosa mentions. And you can get it in really big vats tubs there.

On toast/bread, on pancakes for breakfast, on a spoon for because, in biscuits called alfajores, which are kinda like 2 shortbread rounds sandwiched together with DdL, and covered in chocolate, then sometimes rolled in coconut...

HazeltheMcWitch · 17/10/2012 10:06

And be careful if you're travelling through central and south america as I did, as the colloquial word for Dulce de Leche in Mexico means, ahem, cunt in Chilean slang.

Nice Lady: What do you want on your bread today?
Me: Cunt. I love it.
All other faces in room: horrified.

ObiWan · 17/10/2012 10:09

Grin Hazel .

I'm never going to look at the stuff in quite the same way again!

HazeltheMcWitch · 17/10/2012 10:11

I'll be honest, it did not stop me troughing the stuff (dulce de leche).
Not one iota!

catinwitchyboots · 17/10/2012 10:13

What is it?

Is it like condensed milk??

ShirleyRots · 17/10/2012 10:16

cat - You know the caramel you get on a banoffi pie? It's that. In a can.
