I'd like dd to have less dairy stuff in her diet, but she LOVES milk (we get semi organic). She also drinks water, & lemonade on special occasions. Even if i could reduce the amount of milk she has, what can i replace it with? Fruit juice is full of sugar, plus she hates it anyway, water is too boring & cold to drink all the time. What other drink is nice to drink warm? dont like the thought of dh & I having our nice hot tea in the morning while she has cold water!!

Ah,it was you then Enid!
My,but you have touched a nerve.
I remember my sister crying and shouting when my father used to mutter
'Anyone for mammary exudence?' when pouring tea.

Enid · 27/03/2006 11:23

remember eggs are hen's periods

and egg mayonnaise are hen's periods in hen's period sauce

LadyTophamHatt · 27/03/2006 11:24

Enid.....that is vile!
Ewwwww

compo · 27/03/2006 11:26

How old is your dd? Another one whi is confused as to why you'd want to reduce dairy intake.

moondog · 27/03/2006 11:31

rofl Enid!

spidermama · 27/03/2006 11:32

To make hemp milk you soak the seeds overnight then, if you have three hours to kill, bash it up in a pestle and mortar. For the rest of us, whizz it in the food processor. Inside the husk is a lovely creamy white bit. You pour the 'milk' through muslin to get the horrible gritty husky bits out (This is very important) and there you have it.

It's pretty disgusting on it's own (especially for the untrained tongue) so I also soak cashew nuts, dried fruit (eg. apricots and prunes) and linseed. You can experiment with nuts and seeds. Then add this to the hemp 'milk' with some fresh fruit (bananas are particularly good) and whizz to make a smoothie.

My kids love this. It's so good for you. When I have this I'm full up until lunchtime which is incredible because I'm a greedy cow. Grin

spidermama · 27/03/2006 11:34

Caligula ...Lol at 'lol at hemp milk'. Grin
I forget that I live in Brighton sometimes.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 27/03/2006 11:35

i never drank milk and still dont

Caligula · 27/03/2006 11:40

Lol at hen's periods.

When I was little I always thought they were hen's abortions.

spidermama · 27/03/2006 11:41

So Enid. You're the pus milk messanger who has changed my lifetime habits. Hearty thanks to you. (whether it's true or not Grin)

Enid · 27/03/2006 11:42

I feel tired just reaidng that spidermama

don't you yearn to open a carton sometimes?

Enid · 27/03/2006 11:42

yes

sorry Grin

I never drink non organic milk for the pus/mucus reason

spidermama · 27/03/2006 11:44

I open cartons. Soya, rice, goat. I only do the hemp thing once a month or so, but there's nothing like it I can tell you.

Feistybird · 27/03/2006 11:52

Link to the 'pus' thing please - sounds vile!

moondog · 27/03/2006 11:59

I think we may be getting confused.
If I recall correctly,Enid alerted us to the mucous thing, then the very lovely Heather Mills-MacCartney flagged up the pus angle in an 'Observer' article.

Nightynight · 27/03/2006 13:19

compo and ledodgy - because cows milk is hard to digest. Children used to be fed goats milk, because it was known to be more digestible than cows milk. Then twentieth century science, mass marketing and government health schemes and snobbery about goats being for peasants came along.
I dont ban my children from eating cows milk, because they arent showing any signs of reacting to it at the moment, but I buy goats milk as their main source of calcium. Why bash their little systems with cows milk all the time when there is a better alternative.

Hulababy · 27/03/2006 13:22

My DD (nearly 4) doesn't like milk very much at all and will only ever have a sip at the most. Been like that since being about 18 months old. I don't like milk either and never had done.

DD normally has water to drink. She sometimes has fruit juice. Very occasionally squash (parties, etc.)

If she wants a warm drink - again very rarely asked for - she asks for tea (she's a Yorhshire girl Grin ). She will then be allowed the weakest, milkiest decaf cup of tea you have seen in your life. She occasionally has a milky hot chocolate too.

Enid · 27/03/2006 13:22

if they aren't reacting to it then you aren't bashing their systems with it nightynight

foxinsocks · 27/03/2006 13:25

yuk enid, I will never look at an egg the same again

mine drink water or juice

don't think they've ever missed hot drinks because they've never had them!

Enid · 27/03/2006 13:26

mine don't particularly do cold milk

but they have cocoa every night and dd2 loves warm milk and honey. So do I for that matter Smile

Ledodgy · 27/03/2006 13:27

That's what I thought Enid.

Tortington · 27/03/2006 13:52

corporation pop. am i used to live in the north.

my dd wasembarrased when she invited her friend round and only had water to offer. i found out the friend had given up lemonade for lent and said " we have loads of lemonade in the cupboard - shame you'll have to have water!"

Nightynight · 27/03/2006 19:21

enid - It is not that simple. Problems with cows milk can develop if a child is drinking a lot of it. That is why you are advised that babies should avoid known allergens/problem foods under 1 year if there is a family history of allergy or intolerance.

Not giving cows milk to children is a perfectly good decision, and one that has a long tradition behind it. Even my mil, who is very old fashioned, kept goats for the children's milk when dx was a child!
It is the idea that cows milk is irreplaceable, that is the modern interloper.

threebob · 27/03/2006 19:55

When I wasn't eating eggs or dairy because of ds's allergies I would describe it thus:

I am not a vegan, nor a vegetarian. I love dead animals - I just can't eat the reproductive byproducts of live ones, and that includes nuts.

Tortington · 28/03/2006 12:21

i dont't know what youjust said threebob
