How Do You Use Up Rubbish Wine?

expatinscotland · 22/03/2006 11:25

I bought a bottle in Sainsbury's yesterday that just turned out to be the boak. Had a glass w/dinner and felt like I was drinking battery acid mixed w/vinegar - didn't finish the glass - and then had a splitting headache with it.

Any ideas how to use this stuff up w/o having to drink it??

Why would you feel bad expat?

sparklymieow · 22/03/2006 12:31

take it back, sounds like it is corked.

sparklymieow · 22/03/2006 12:32

I worked at Safeway and we were always getting bottles of wine back that were yucky.

spidermama · 22/03/2006 12:33

I wouldn't even cook with horrible wine. It ruins the food.

It does sound corked. How annoying for you.

skinnymalinky · 22/03/2006 12:36

i would drink it after drinking the good wine - dont notice taste so much when already pissed! GrinWink

jayjaybaby · 22/03/2006 12:38

drink it
i wouldnt know one from the other
what about using it for cooking

Squarer · 22/03/2006 13:07

take it back!! seriously!!! They won't bat an eyelid

It's not Ebay ya know Wink Grin

Radley · 22/03/2006 13:09

Sounds to me like it has corked, I would take it back saying so. Or there may have been a particular problem with that year/crop.

CountessDracula · 22/03/2006 13:11

take it back they will replace

Or use to cook. If is corked the corkiness goes if you cook with it

expatinscotland · 22/03/2006 13:15

LOL, Squarer. That wifey had the nerve to message me back and write, 'I don't understand why you wouldn't be happy to have this item back if it is what you say it is.' So I wrote, 'B/c one reason people sell things is that they no longer want them.' DUH! Knew she was angling for a refund b/c she didn't like it, and thought she'd go for the 'it's not leather' route. I'm not buying that. I can tell the difference. I'm a snob when it comes to accessories, beauty products and shoes. :o

I'm going to try to pull vinegar from it.

I just can't take it back. It was only £3 and I'd have to get in the car and use petrol to take it back. Not worth the hassle to me.

It had one of those plastic corks.

I'm telling you, folks, the Lidl stuff from France is MUCH, MUCH better.

CountessDracula · 22/03/2006 13:17

if plastic cork then can't be corked!

Is prob just crap wine

Radley · 22/03/2006 13:21

I've been told by a good friend who works in the wine industry that the wine can turn even with plastic corks, something to do with the bottling and corking process.

CountessDracula · 22/03/2006 13:22

yes if air gets in but is much less likely with plastic corks

Radley · 22/03/2006 13:23

Has anyone tried the wine with screw caps? I tried some last night and was quite impressed.

CountessDracula · 22/03/2006 13:25

Yes have had plenty, all fine.

the plastic/screwtops can't be infected (or whatever the word is) with the chemical that causes the corked taste.

quanglewangle · 22/03/2006 13:41

There may still be a bad seal on the bottle though, letting the vinegar-making beasties in. If it tastes like vinegar that is probably what has happened. Take it back.

Radley · 22/03/2006 13:45

I've had red wine from a plastic bottle once, (from tesco's) and to be honest wasn't keen.

I would definately take it back though

MaggieW · 23/03/2006 07:54

Here's a novel way to recover a bad red wine or improve a cheap but not very good one - put it in a blender, give it a minute or so whizzing around. The air which is introduced softens and improves the taste a lot. Sounds unbelievable but this was demonstrated to me by a scientist (it worked). He also showed me how to get a cork out of a bottle without using a bottle opener but I can't remember how that one went!

Lucycat · 23/03/2006 12:19

Would have to agree that the £2.69 Bordeaux from Lidl is good - just bought 6 this morning! along with some fab looking Brie and Camenbert!

Surfermum · 23/03/2006 12:35

I add a splosh of Cassis and taste it again.

Karmamother · 23/03/2006 13:07

Expat, reminds me of a bottle of Chianti from M&S. It had a dead fly in it. It'd obviously got in at the winery as it was well pickled!! Thankfully it ended up in bf's gob not mine.Grin When I took it back, they gave a refund & posted the fly off to the head office. I later got a letter from them saying the fly had been mislaid in the post. Yeah right.

Interesting about wizzing bad wine in a blender, might try that. The vinegar sounds like the best idea. Endless red wine vinegar salad dressing...yumm.

Ktee · 30/03/2006 12:59

What a fuss! Why didn't you just take it back?
it would have been replaced/refunded without more than the most cursory query.
It has happened to me in the past but it's not a problem - annoying at the time obviously.
