I don't but am seriously thinking of doing so, get slightly fed up at having to think what to cook for tea each day (I do have a slow cooker which I love and use), was wondering if anyone did it and found it easier this way. And if I do mealplan it means that I can get all ingredients in my weekly shop

Blush Blush how embarassed am I, it was meant to be shifts LOL. Though the typo would be more apt, which is surprising considering his shocking diet.

fruitful · 19/03/2006 19:11

I plan weekly - mostly because I am incapable of thinking when I'm hungry. Looking in the fridge and thinking "what shall I cook" usually results in a small meltdown followed by ham sandwiches.

And I plan the quick meals for busy days. Or slow-cooker meals for days when I'll have time in the morning but be busy later in the day.

Surfermum · 19/03/2006 19:27

Here you go Shellybelly. Perhaps I ought to add that it's 5 weeks of meals Mon to Fri, we take the weekend as it comes, depending on what we're doing. We're also sometimes completely decadent and abandon the menu and go for a KFC Bucket!! Ok here goes ...

Calista · 19/03/2006 21:33

Pmsl at 'dh's shits' - I honestly thought he had some sort of digestive problem as well and Radley was just being frank! :o

It fitted so well with him being a fussy eater too! :o

granarybeck · 19/03/2006 21:56

I had to click onto another thread as I was annoying dh as i was laughing so much at 'dh's shits' and he was trying to watch top gear! Really tickled me, glad he is healthy and just works shifts radley Smile

Thomcat · 19/03/2006 22:01

Yes I do and it works really well. I love going through reciepe books and sit quietly one night during the week and plan things to make. I end up with an empty fridge at the end of week and love not havig to think what shall i do for dinner tonight every day plus it saves money planning ahead.

I plan a week in advance. I do it just before booking my online shop and try and only buy that food plus essentials/basics. I only plan 5 days a week though as we generally eat out/with friends or family at weekends.

DH and DD are meat eaters. I don't eat meat. This week we are having:

  • fillet steak (I am having trout fillet), jacket potatoes and salad
  • meat/root veg casseroles with Yorkshire pudding
  • veggie pasta bake
  • lamb/veggie kebabs and pitta
  • tuna steaks, salad and rice
BettySpaghetti · 19/03/2006 22:07

LOL -Just returned to this thread only to find out that Radley's DH's "shits" is not IBS as I suspected but a work pattern !! Grin

Radley · 20/03/2006 07:53

LOL Grin

Kiss · 20/03/2006 08:38

Inspirational and funny - LOL at Radley and the Tweenies. What a lovely way to start Monday Grin - I am off to plan!

Surfermum · 21/03/2006 11:26

I can't believe I'm giving advice on a meal planning thread .... if my domestic science teacher could see me now. I was thrown out of lessons because I only got 18% in the exam!!

Anyway, alittlebitshy, it's really simple, all I do is put some chicken breasts in the oven and half way through cooking I add some slices of cheese and wrap some ham over the top. Just makes it a little bit more interesting.

Kelly1978 · 21/03/2006 11:30

I find it easier and it means that I don't have to keep poppign to the shops and dragging all the kids out of the car for ingredients. Doesn't seem to be cheaper though - I spent £160 in asda on sat. I was Shock

Bozza · 21/03/2006 11:37

I do it, but not things for specific days. I usually try to cook 3x between Friday and Monday, leaving one day to eat out/visit family etc. I cook double and add to my freezer stash which is what we eat from on Tues-Thurs because I work these days.

So Mon/Tues I menu plan and write a shopping list. I get the online order in by Weds for delivery Thursday evening because then I've got all the stuff in for my cooking days.

This last weekend we have had:
Fri - buckwheat and veg pie with garlic bread and salad
Sat - macaroni cheese with leeks and bacon
Sun - Chinese takeaway at friends
Mon - shepherd's pie with cabbage

I alternate the days depending on how busy I find myself.

lalaa · 21/03/2006 11:41

i find it really irritating when we don't have a plan - hate having to pop in and out of supermarkets on a near daily basis to pick up odd things. it's worth the pain of having to think up 5 or 7 meals at one go.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 21/03/2006 11:51

I have no plans for what I am doing for tea! Ever!
I so wish that I could get a 'system' in place, I hate standing in the kitchen shouting through to dh 'what shall we have for tea then?'
Minutes later dh is popping out to the chippy!

I have a horrid day to day routine where I work mornings, dont eat brekkie, rarely eat lunch (just feed ds mashed up veg or cheese on toast etc) and then feel too tired to cook tea!

Dh eats a cooked meal at work for lunch sometimes, so I never know what he wants or what he has had during the day! He also doesnt eat fruit or veg, yes none at all.

I find myself eating around dh all the time and not eating healthy. Reading some of the tips on here has helped, and will be looking at food threads...

hi,
if you look on netmums under food they have a sample 4 week menu. its quite good

williamsmummy · 21/03/2006 16:08

thank goodness ! thought i was the only woman in the world to do this!
only plan a week in advance,
I do a main meal, lunch and breakfast.
( all my kids have packed lunch for school)
and I do a snack list so that the kids know what they can eat after school)

this week,

sunday , (lunch , homemade soup, sandwiches,) dinner, roast beef yorshire pud, apple crumble and custard.

monday
sweet and sour pork chops , peas and sweet corn ( this is the nearest I get to not cooking as I use a jar of sauce)

tuesday

salmon lasange, salad, garlic bread.

wednesday

lemon chicken with cous cous and veg

thursday,

shepards pie, cabbage, carrots

friday

Lamb stew and dumplings

saturday
veggie curry

I am going to have to think more carefully because of the complaints,...........teenagers are begging for me to stop giving them stews, last weeks chicken stew was declared 'medievil'
Why do you keep giving us this old stuff? cant we eat modern food'?

PandaG · 21/03/2006 16:38

Regularly meal plan for the week, although may vary it a bit if I find a bargain when going shopping. Next plan is to do an online shop once a month (so to move onto monthly planning), and pick uip all fresh stuff locally.

elclose · 21/03/2006 21:36

If you are gonna shop online make sure you go to hotukdeals.com and get a voucher code for money off usually tesco or asda you can get 10-15 quid off..
