Dinner party dessert

We've been invited to a dinner party where everyone brings a course and have volunteered to make dessert, so looking for ideas.

We are expats so I'd like to do something traditionally british if possible but that is not a necessity as we live in a tropical country and I don't think a stodgy pudding would go down that well. Also need to bear in mind that not all ingredients are available here. We do have a well stocked larder so should have anything with a reasonable shelf life but fresh ingredients (eg certain fruits) might be difficult to get hold.

Any ideas? TIA

Chocolate fondant? Although will need to be cooked there.

Banofee pie, cheesecake, pavlova.

Kahlua4me · 17/09/2012 16:49

Cheesecake, trifle, profiteroles

alemci · 17/09/2012 16:53

pavlova is always good but assemble it when you get there as it can go soggy or a biscuit based cheesecake with a light filling

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 17/09/2012 16:57

What about a meringue roulade? Easy ish to make, holds up well and impressive when you cut into it

karmakameleon · 17/09/2012 16:59

Ooh, I love pavlova but not sure what I could top it with. We don't get the soft fruits (strawberries, raspberries etc) that I would normally use and I haven't seen mangos or passion fruit for ages.

Also I should say that I probably need to make it advance and reheat if required so something like chocolate fondant is out. But transportation isn't an issue as the party is only next door.

Meringue roulade sounds lovely. Any recipes?

Creme brûlée - chilled to perfection, then topped with sugar and blasted under the grill or with a blowtorch just before serving.

Small portions, not too heavy :-)

alemci · 17/09/2012 17:04

can you buy frozen fruits anywhere? tinned peaches possibly or fruit cocktail or pineapple, kiwi fruit.

if not probably tricky.

what about tiramasau

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 17/09/2012 17:05

Delia online does a chocolate and hazelnut one which is nice - sorry not got time to do link
Also, I think Rachel Allen does a lemon curd and raspberry one too which should be on google.
Both tried and tested by moi

IcouldstillbeJoseph · 17/09/2012 17:05

Sorry just read no raspberries - Delia it is!

karmakameleon · 17/09/2012 17:22

Thanks for all these ideas.

No frozen fruit available so think pavlova is out. So at the moment it's between the trifle and roulade for me, but DH is partial to a cheesecake so that might also be a winner.

Any other suggestions and recipes welcome.

I have a recipe for a fabulous easy no bake toblerone and baileys cheesecake if that would work? Always goes down very well at parties

iklboo · 17/09/2012 17:34

I do apple, cider & choc chip crumble but it might be a bit heavy? Cook the apples in a decent glug of good cider, top with crumble & sprinkle with dark chocolate chips (or chopped up dark chocolate bar). Mmmmmmmmmm.

BillyBollyBandy · 17/09/2012 17:44

Good God fish some of us are on diets here and you go waving your toblerone and baileys cheesecake about...Grin

Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee can you post the recipe for that, sounds amazing!

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 17/09/2012 17:58

Haha Grin it is amazing, and the good news is you don't need much of it cause it's sooooo lush. I'll post the recipe once I've got the kids to bed

Well I asked DH and he wants pavlova. Was wondering if pomegranate could work as a topping. Any thoughts?
