Other than rice? Shop bought nan is never like the local takeaway. Not doing a starter and guests have split pudding and cheese board between them.

Look at a takeaway menu for inspiration ..that's what I always do.

Northey · 17/09/2012 14:00

Why not get naan from the local takeaway? It will stay warm in a low oven.

multipoodles · 17/09/2012 14:23

Usually we serve chappatis, pompodoms and a variety of rice, pilau, plain & chana and a few small dishes of chutneys and relishes. Our takeaway won't sell naan bread on it's own only part of a takeaway order. Shop naan isn't great but we will serve it occassionally as the kids like it OK :)

Pascha · 17/09/2012 14:24

Do sag aloo. Spinach and potato is a nice creamy filler instead of bread.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 17/09/2012 15:15

Naan is suprisingly easy to make ... Naan

Beanbagz · 17/09/2012 16:11

How about Delia's saffron roast potatoes or a lovely masala mash?

gregssausageroll · 17/09/2012 17:59

Fab ideas. Thank you very much.

love these with curry peshwari (sp) naan

cashmere · 17/09/2012 18:52

In Asda's ethnic section they have flat breads- the lovely buttery ones that are really good. Can't remember if roti or puri but much nicer than shop bought nan.

gregssausageroll · 17/09/2012 19:26

Thanks

oh this is making me hungry!

sag aloo is one of my favourite indian dishes. i absolutely love curried potatoes, and love spinach in curries, so definitely agree to do this as a side dish.

and chapatti. it is easy to make from scratch or you can buy them from a supermarket (ok) or international supermarket (nicer).

and of course poppadum, pickles, raita.

and beer.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/09/2012 20:29

Waitrose do decent paratha - nicer than the usual chapatis/naan breads in Sainsbo's etc.

Make my coconut chutney stuff - dessicated coconut, finely chopped green chilli, coriander, yoghurt and salt and pepper.

Mattar paneer is easy and delicious and will make the curry go further.

Bowl of diced onion, cucumber, tomato with mint and lemon juice.

Yoghurt and mint raita.

cashmere · 17/09/2012 20:34

Asda's were paratha! Lorraine Pascal making flatbread tonight- now!

Frontpaw · 17/09/2012 20:34

Can I come too??

Raita, pickles, popadoms, lemon rice (M+S ooooo yummity tum), breads (deffo get from local takeaway) or maybe heat pita or deli wrap type thingies. I love dahl in all forms, and mutar paneer. Actually, the M+S indian foods are very nice indeed.

Frontpaw · 17/09/2012 20:39

Does anyone know how to make the cold salady disk that looks like rice crispies with onion and tomato? Sounds lovely I know but I had it at someone's house and it was yummy. Also, is it poori, the small crispy dumplings filled with yoghurt?

I am hungry again!!!!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/09/2012 20:40

Pani poori - gosh, I LOVE panni poori!

Rice crispy things are called bhel iirc and can be bought in specialist shops.

MerryCosIWonaGold · 17/09/2012 20:42

Frozen parathas definitely (Tesco, Asda and Sains all sell them round our way). I get loads of compliments when I serve these, but I do them as a side to basmati rice. It's easy to cook good rice (I pride myself on being better than the takeaway), just takes some practice to get the water quantity correct.

Frontpaw · 17/09/2012 20:55

Rice must be steamed. U-huh. I am a rice queen.

Japple · 18/09/2012 04:01

All curries are wonderful. We serve ours over rice. However,it is necessary to
"Calm the Palette" down with a little Side Dish of Cold Cranberries. It adds a
nice Zing all its own.We use Slices of cold cranberries.

Inyourhippyhat · 18/09/2012 04:19

Dahl, bhajis (onion, potato) - there are baked varieties, spiced onions, raita, plain natural yogurt, aloo jeera (chunks of warm potato tossed with cumin and turmeric), lime pickle, bananas with yogurt and mint, bombay potatoes,
