I just experimented and it was a disaster. Anyone got any simple delish recipes I can try?

Did you rinse it properly, MT? You have to rinse it and rinse it and rinse it before you cook it though, otherwise it tastes horrible - there's a coating on it that you have to rinse off.

spidermama · 18/03/2006 20:56

Rinse it well. Cook it in stock. Let it cool and make a salad with puy lentils, olives, very finely chopped red onions, fresh herbs, maybe some chunks of stilton, cherry toms, walnuts.

You could also curry it.

Apparently it makes good porridge but I haven't tried.

For me the trick is to make sure you put plenty of flavoursome things with it as it's not tasty in its own right.

expatinscotland · 18/03/2006 20:57

Rinse it THREE times. At least. Otherwise, yeah, it tastes bitter and horrid. I use it as cereal in the mornings, with maple syrup and berries and spices like nutmegs, cinnammon and mixed spice.

expatinscotland · 18/03/2006 20:58

Serve w/warmed milk or soya milk. I like it w/vanilla soyamilk.

starlover · 18/03/2006 20:58

i never rinse! maybe you can't taste the bitterness once it's in stew?

monkeytrousers · 18/03/2006 21:01

I thought I rinsed it enough but I'll take your advice and do it more. It was a bit tapioca-like in consistancy, with a squiggly 'germ' in the middle. Is that right or did I just boil a bag of frogspawn? Bleurghh!

Hmmm. Mine comes out more like porridge. How much water did you use?

starlover · 18/03/2006 21:06

how did you cook it?

monkeytrousers · 18/03/2006 22:51

Boiled

I do mine in the slow cooker overnight. Did you salt the water or use stock?

Spider, your recipe sounds delicious! Gonna give it a bash tomorrow.

brimfull · 18/03/2006 23:14

what is it?

moondog · 18/03/2006 23:17

Eh?
I've never rinsed mine.

I treat it like tabbouleh. Add chopped cucumber, tomatoes, spring onions, olives, mint and fetta cheese then dress with oil and lemon.

Otherwise,as an accompaniment to meaty things, like rice.

monkeytrousers · 19/03/2006 11:38

Going to try in in my minestrone instead of pasta

Ggirl, according to my cookbook, "it's the only grain that provides all of the essential acids making it an excellent source of protien for vegetarians. It is also rich in iron and calcium."

monkeytrousers · 19/03/2006 11:45

monkeytrousers · 19/03/2006 16:02

brimfull · 19/03/2006 17:30

where do you get it?

expatinscotland · 19/03/2006 17:35

i get it in Holland & Barrett's.

brimfull · 19/03/2006 17:37

thanks eis

FrannyandZooey · 19/03/2006 17:41

Just cook it gently and use like rice. Sounds like you maybe overcooked it? A splash of soy sauce or shoyu when it is cooked works wonders.

starlover · 20/03/2006 10:36

you can get it in sainsburys now too

monkeytrousers · 21/03/2006 11:22

It's especially lush in veggie lentil soup I've just discovered!
