Supermarket chilled ready meal shepherds pie I'm pretty is full of salt, but couldn't say which is worse tbh.

Aero · 17/03/2006 19:13

oops - meant pretty sure

Cadbury · 17/03/2006 19:14

yes but you are pretty aero Grin

Aero · 17/03/2006 19:14

Blush not sure I'd agree Cadders! lol

GDG · 17/03/2006 19:14

Hnmm, tough call - but I detest MacDonalds so given the choice might go for the shepherd's pie. OTOH, mine would only eat the chips of the MacDonalds so no crappy meat consumed.

emkana · 17/03/2006 20:36

Talking of crappy meat at McD - they claim that their burgers contain only meat and seasoning - can that really be true?

FrannyandZooey · 17/03/2006 20:41

Healthwise? I dunno.

Morally? Need you ask? :)

notasheep · 17/03/2006 20:43

Where does the meat in the shepherds pie come from?!
What is in it?

I wouldnt eat either

HRHQueenOfQuotes · 17/03/2006 20:45

sheperds pie worse - although I do go to McDonalds I don't eat their burgers - just their chicken (which has definitely improved in recent years) - still think their burgers look like cr*p.

zippitippitoes · 17/03/2006 20:59

well assuming you mean particularly for kids I have no idea, but additive wise I think I might go for the mcd combo as preferable, although I think the word organic might be a red herring

tbh the first sounds fatty but the second sounds more artificial..if it was occasional then I would go for either.

i wouldn't be pushing for one above the other

sazhig · 17/03/2006 21:43

I'd have the mcdonalds meal, but with the following changes to make it better for a child:
Hamburger not cheeseburger (avoids the yucky processed cheese), plain with no salt or ketchup added. Plus I'd ask for unsalted fries as well. The onyy real nasty then is the bread, which tbh is no better than most of the sliced bread at the supermarket. Much better than a highly processed & salty shepards pie.

We go to Mcd's occasionally & ask for the meal above excep;t with carrot sticks, but make sure we get our fries without salt so ds can have some. He's only just started having the bread & as he doesnt really like it he doesn't have very much anyway.
Mcdonalds are faily open about their ingredients:
\link{http://www.mcdonalds.co.uk/resources/img/sections/eatsmart/Nutrition.pdf\see here} cant find any shepards pie ingredients online though.

sazhig · 17/03/2006 21:45

My dh used to work for Mcd's btw so we know pretty much how most of their stuff is made & what to avoid! & yes their burgers are made using only beef!

oops · 17/03/2006 21:48

both are crap

emkana · 17/03/2006 21:57

I think they are both rubbish.

Was talking to another mum about what our children were having for tea tonight and I think she felt that her choice of Sainsbury's Taste the difference shepherds pie was superior to the McD.

Whereas I will just stand up and say "Yes I'm a rubbish mother - I let my children have McD sometimes"

I would say the supermarket one, but mainly because for us McDonalds is a going out treat, so the poor food value is less of an issue, whereas the supermarket meal is unnecessary, because you are at home anyway, so you might as well make something better. I think McDonalds has improved quite a lot in recent years. When we go it's nice to be able to choose salad, water, fruit juice, milk (agree the organic thing is just plain weird), carrots and fruit as extras. I do eat ready meals, but you have to seriously check the ingredients for crap - especially for some odd reason on those marketed at children.

Surfermum · 17/03/2006 22:01

I think I would opt for the supermarket meal being worse because you have to do washing up after that.

emkana · 17/03/2006 22:05

Grin surfermum

OP posts:
sazhig · 17/03/2006 23:48

Ahh but you could just eat the shepherds pie out of the packet with a plastic fork Grin Grin

Surfermum · 19/03/2006 19:07

I am so in tune with your reasoning Sazhig!

joelalie · 20/03/2006 12:52

The ready meal. Mine have McD's approx once a week - we exactly don't buy it for it's nutritional value Grin but because they enjoy it and it saves me having to cook on Friday in between picking up kids from school and taking them to karate. (OK, I'll beat myself up later). Having said that I think that the content of their meals are improving - less salt on their chips, pure beef in their burgers etc. And everything is listed.

And why buy a ready-made shepherds pie anyway... couldn't be much easier to make. Plus I tend to be a bit mistrustful of anything containing minced meat as it can cover a multitude of sins.....
And on top of all that a 'family' portion of any ready meal is rarely enough for my family.... Wink
