marmalade cake filling substitute?

I'm making a layer cake next week- orange flavour sponge, topped with chocolate ganache and the filling is meant to be one layer of plain chocolate ganche and one layer of marmalade. We all loathe marmalade so i'm thinking apricot jam as a subsitite? alternatively another layer of chocolate ganache. Any other ideas? Its for my grown up DC who loves chocolate orange.

Is it the bits of peel that you don't like? If so you could strain out the peel so it's just orange jam. I'm not sure that apricot jam is quite right in a chocolate orange cake.

Flavour the chocolate with orange flavouring?

hmm i've never tried those shredless orange jellies- apparently they are a bit sweeter than marmalade. I'll see if i can sample some see what it tastes like. Its the bitterness i dont like with marmalade.

I could flavour the ganache with orange oil, thats a good idea. In the book (boutique baking) the different colour fillings look really nice though and i will lose that if both are chocolate.
apricot sprung to mind as it looks similar to marmalade.

hmm there is such a thing as orange curd isn't there? maybe that would work...

Yes, you can make orange curd just like lemon curd. It's not difficult to make either if you can't buy it.

I have a/the solution! I made a chocolate orange cake for a birthday party and was such a success.

Just as you mentioned, chocolate ganache and marmalade fillings - but I bought a small jar of shredless marmalade then mixed it in a tiny saucepan over a low heat with a tablespoon of golden syrup. It completely cut through the sour marmalade taste and made a nice, spreadable fruity layer. Just let it cool after you've done the syrup encorporation Wink.

Mmmmmmm it was good!

ok, in the end i went for St Dalfour's orange and ginger spread which worked very well! I decided the proportion of orange to ginger meant it wasn't going to be too marmaladey and i was right.
