Please give me some ideas for school packed lunch that doesn't involve sandwiches

DD started secondary school yesterday. She hates sandwiches or wraps and had school dinners in primary. But seeing as sec school dinners are £4.50 per day I've told her this will be an occasional thing, not daily (she has a twin sister so t would be £9 per day!).

So could I please have some ideas for lunches please. I've done tuna pasta for tom. Is there some sort of savoury muffin I read about on here?

my ds takes cheese and crackers with tomatoes an olives and cucumber sticks

cous cous?

my dh sometimes has chicken and potato salad with mayo and cheese on the top

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 06/09/2012 06:45

we tend to do leftovers from night before...

Trazzletoes · 06/09/2012 06:47

We sometimes make burgers with a pack of turkey mince, 4 spring onions, a tbsp of Thai (or any) curry sauce and some coriander. Grilled, they're pretty healthy and tasty...

Oat cakes and a separate pot of houmous?

sandyballs · 06/09/2012 09:26

Thanks great ideas, not sure they can heat anything though. Anyone else?

Do they like Pitta bread? My friend claimed to hate sandwiches but would eat pretty much anything on a pitta.

Pasta salad?
Couscous or Quinoa with lots of vegetables, feta cheese etc?
Tortilla?
Quiche?

Basically posh picnic food. Maybe pop to an m&s and take inspiration from their 'food to go' section

The DDs love the little packs of sushi from M&S, and at only £1 each, I like it too! They usually only have a 2 day sell by though, so only for it you are passing.

Trazzletoes · 06/09/2012 09:41

? No need to heat! We cook the burgers the night before and eat them cold with salad. Still tasty. We also eat a lot of leftovers. Again still tasty cold (apart from gnocchi -rank).

Pastas in a Thermos
Salads
Crackers/breadsticks and dips
Scotch eggs
cheese scones

canyou · 06/09/2012 09:59

This week we had
Mon Tuna salad
Tue BBQ Chicken pieces lime dip and avocado salad
Wed Hummus with home made corn chips and veggies
Thur egg mayo salad and crackers with leaves [1 has gazpacho]
Fri they will get pasties chicken and corn with cheese [nice cold] or sausage roll

They take a roll/crackers for the meal break and a muffin/scone with fruit, yoghurt cookies or home made cake for small break
Water and or freshly squeezed juice

Sometimes a flask of soup or a stew or pasta hot during the winter
I will admit my DC are weird and will eat anything the stranger the better and I have marched into the school with a full nutritional calorie count of my DC week when challenged about lunch box contents Blush

Some good ideas here www.taste.com.au/recipes/collections/lunch+box+ideas/1

There are some good suggestions on the BBC Food website here and a savoury muffin recipe here.

Humus with pita bread or french bread.

salads.

Meatballs - cooked the day before and served cold.

Get some chicken pieces, olive oil and ground corriander.

Mixk the corriander in the olive oil, put pieces of chicken on the end of cocktail sticks and put them (the meat with the stick sticking up) in the olive oil. Leave overnight and then grill or fry them - leave the cocktail sticks on, it makes them easier to cook and to eat.

hard boiled eggs.
olives / nuts / cherry tomatoes.

rissotto / rice with veg or fish (maybe not in the heat of summer)

boiled new potatoes, either salted or as part of a potato salad.

Get some wraps / tortillas
add cooked rice, shredded chicken or left over chilli, add some chese and fold into parcels so all the corners are sealed (you can use water to seal) bake in the oven for 20 mins. You end up with a crispy parcel that doesn't fall appart in a school bag but can be eaten like a sandwich.

Spanish tortilla in slices.

Cold cooked sausages.
