Ideas for an eating apple glut....and how do you freeze them?

We 've got so many at the minute, nice little apples, a little tart and I wanted to do something like a chutney, get a bit festive maybe! But would love to know of any other good tried and tested recipes for them.

Another thing, I was planning on freezing some but googling it shows this is a minefield of potential brown apple mush, any tips from a seasoned apple freezer?

Thanks

just peel and chop them, put in bowl of water with a little lemon juice as you go to avoid browning. boil a few table spoons of water in a big pan them add the apples a little at a time and cook quickly stirring with a wooden spoon until they soften down. Add sugar to taste and allow to cool before freezing in pots or bags. Can then use then for pies, crumble , apple sauce etc.

Thanks, so you use very little water to soften them then. Good to know!

yes, not too much water as they will be too sloppy!! can always add a little more if they start sticking.

If you want to freeze them as chunks rather than cooked down to a softer ready-to-eat texture, start off as fridayfreedom describes, peeling and chopping and dropping them into a bowl of water with lemon juice as you go - then bring a pan of water to the boil and blanch the apples for a minute or so - this will prevent them from going brown. Drain them, lay them on a paper-lined tray in a single layer, stick them in a freezer, and once they're frozen you can tip them into a freezer bag. You can cook them from frozen eg in a crumble.

Also, if you want a nice chutney recipe, this one is fab.

Thank you! I'm about to blanch my first batch. Love the chutney recipe, going to give that a go for sure!
