hand mixer

can anyone recommend a handmixer? I've had mine for over 10 years and it just packed in today. I'm not sure of the make, could be moulinex as it has a moulinex type squiggle on the base. Its just for whisking meringues and beating cakes, i don't need any fancy attachments. I'm looking for something solid that will last another 10 years (at least). Thanks.

I bought the Lakeland own one as my cheapy one packed in. It had dough, whisk and mixer attachment and nifty speed dial . It's actual pretty powerful so don't often need to use full power.

I now wonder why didn't buy a posh one ages ago.

I got one from Tesco, their own brand when it was half price, at a frankly ridiculous 8.50? or similar. And its been going strong for over two years with frequent use. It has dough hooks too.

I've got a dualit one - not quite as pricey as the toasters and I love it. Very sturdy and mines rubbery black so doesn't scratch like a metal/chrome one. Was £45 I think but I've not regretted it.

The dualit come up excellent on the Which? guide and look robust.

I bought a Anthony Worral Thompson by Breville from Comet last year for £20! It was end of line and its terrific value.

I have checked my Which? buy and the following come up:

Bodum Bistro £50
Kenwood K Mix £50
Cheap kenwood £20

I looked at the quality of the paddles and was disappointed with the thin steel sections which put me off the cheaper kenwoods. I dont use the dough tool.

I would take into account the weight as holding for a long time can be exhausting. I do love the handmixer even though hubby as offered to buy me a singing dancing worktop one but I cant see the advantage I can pop the handheld back in the cupboard in 2 secs and it works brilliantly for the price.

See if you can get bargins on e-bay.

The dualit is heavy-that's the one thing but I don't find it a problem. I had a £20 kenwood before and wouldn't have replaced it if I hadn't dropped it Blush

I have one that my granny had, it's probably as old as I am.

You don't need a recommendation, as far as I can tell they all do the same thing. Just get one from the supermarket.

Had an old Kenwood for years, then had some cheaper mixers, which quite quickly broke. Now have a KMix which is fab! Metal body so much sturdier than the cheaper ones!! Plus in a nice range of colours, handle is non slip.

HazeltheMcWitch · 11/09/2012 10:42

I have the Dualit one also, and it is fab. It can withstand a really good baking session incl lots using dough hook without the motor sounding troubled. However its robustness does make it heavy: my mum has arthritis hates it.

So, if you have the cash and no troubles with wrist, I'd recommend it!
Another sneaky benefit is that its heaviness means that I need to help DCs (3+6) hold it when we're baking together, which I secretly like as I am VERY controlling wen it comes to baking!

thanks for all the recommendations. I am hoping my new one lasts as long as my last did- i've worked out it was probably nearer 20 years old! felt quite sad binning it. I looked at a few in the shops to get a feel of them. There were only about 5 to choose from where I am. In the end I got one i hadn't been able to look at in the shops simply because it got good reviews and was much reduced. I got an Andrew James 300w hand mixer. Its better than my last one, the beaters are wider and made quick work of my sponge mix last night. Its red and bit heavier than my last but not too heavy. Plastic body. It cost just under £17 (reduced from nearly £40) so we shall see how long it lasts. My only concern is it says to allow it to cool down after 5 minutes of continuous use.
If it doesn't last i may go for a dualit as that seems very popular on here!
