I've never tried stovies, even though my Mum was Scottish and I've lived here for 11 years.
Give me your best recipes, so I can have a go at making it later this weekGrin

Hated my mum's stovies, gave me the boak. I think she was so poor that there was hardly any meat and way too much slimy onion.....unless that's a Dundee version. Refused to eat it for years.

FannyFifer · 04/09/2012 21:46

What is wrong with you heathens, corned beef for stovies, not mince, that would just be mince and tatties. Smile

AgentProvocateur · 04/09/2012 21:54

Can I just throw black pudding into the discussion here? Wink

OvO · 04/09/2012 21:59

My mammy always made stories is with skinless sausages so that's how I make mine now. Mince is just wrong! But ask 10 people for a stories recipe and you'll get 10 different replies. Grin

Sausages, Nooooooooooooo!!!Grin

OvO · 04/09/2012 22:03

And FFs ipad autocorrected stovies to stories. Bastarding Scottishist iPad!

JaponicaTroggs · 04/09/2012 23:14

Stovies has to be corned beef! Our passed down Dundee family recipe is simple. Slice potatoes till you have a panful, throw in sliced onion, chopped tin of corned beef and a mugful of stock. Cook till all mushed up and potatoes are soft. I also like to add a big squirt of ketchup.

HappyGirlNow · 05/09/2012 18:22

No mince, no corned beef, only sausage. No veg apart from potato and onion.
The End.

AmberLeaf · 05/09/2012 18:26

hmph! you cant possibly do it with sausage and then nit pick over my carrots! Grin

NettOlympicSuperstar · 05/09/2012 18:28

Fiiiggghhhttt Grin
Question, is it wrong to freeze the leftovers, with the view of making them into a stovie pie?

OP posts:
Catsmamma · 05/09/2012 18:33

definitely no carrots in it! godsake!

I usually use mince or left over bits of roast, loads of onions sweated off first, then in with the meat, browning that if it is not already cooked, in with any left over gravy or stock (or water!) throw in the chopped potatoes and jsut leave it over a low heat till the tatties are cooked and fluffy ish....it helps if you can let it steam a bit.

And always served with plenty of beetroot.

I cant answer re leftovers 'cos I ate it all! but im sure it'd be fine.

Catsmamma i'll forgive the carrots slur and the beetroot yuck seeing as you use mince/meat and not sausage like all these heathens Grin

Catsmamma · 05/09/2012 18:52

i know...sausages! filthy scutters

In my defence I do adore beetroot and would probably have it with everything.

AmberLeaf · 05/09/2012 19:15

When you say beetroot do you mean real fresh looks like its just been dug beetroot or the jarred pickled stuff?

I can forgive the fresh type. I like it just dug, boiled and served with a blob of mayo!

tittytittyhanghang · 05/09/2012 19:25

onions, tatties, stovie dripping from the butchers and corn beef all in a pot simmering away. I mash mines up a bit with a large fork as well. And i think stovie leftovers just about taste better the day after. Am so having stovies the morn :)

Catsmamma · 05/09/2012 19:29

either...fresh and boiled or pickled in all its vinegary glory.

I used to drink the vinegar from the jar when pg.

AmberLeaf · 05/09/2012 19:37

I do love most things pickled but have never been able to get on with pickled beetroot. I think its the way it stains everything else on the plate!

Yes titty I enjoyed a stovie breakfast yesterday morning!
