Is it one with the little pans?

We've not used ours for ages but I do really like it when we get around to it. This is what I tend to do:

  • cook some new potatoes and put in a bowl
  • slice some good melting cheese (you can get special raclette cheese but I usually get gouda)
  • have a bowl of sliced red onions, a bowl of sliced mushrooms, a bowl of sliced peppers, a bowl of sweetcorn etc
  • have some chorizo or little sausages or something (I'm a veggie so unsure re that bit!)
  • people cook any combo of the above in their little pans with cheese on top of them (the mushrooms, chorizo etc can also be cooked on top of the grill)
  • eat with pickles and salad

Usually dp then sees what else will cook on top of it, eg eggs / pickled onions / slices of cucmber / last night's leftovers and it all descends into madness. :)

Thinly sliced strips of meat or fish to cook on the top, along with peppers, onions, cherry tomatoes etc.

Sliced french bread, or mini baked potatoes to pour the melted cheese over.

You can cook eggs in the pans under the grill but personally I think they come out a little rubbery.

Obviously you can marinate the meat/fish if you want alternative flavours.

This website has it pretty much covered!

Raclette grills are ace! We love ours. Don't buy Pre-sliced Raclette cheese it's sooo expensive, get it in a big piece and cut up and freeze. You can get a cheese slicer tool thing but not necessary if you have a sharp knife. Cheese cold meats new potatoes and cornichon are all you need!

Raclette literally means 'little scraper' (racler = to scrape); you put slices of cheese under the grill, then scrape them onto boiled potatoes and cured meat.

As has already been said, you can put other (thin) things under it.

I could murder a raclette right now but it is roasting here; it's one of the reasons I love autumn so much!

Steak cooks really well on it. I usually have one raw meat - steak or chicken and then sliced up
peppers
onion
baby sweet corn
asparagus
string beans
courgette
aubergine
mushrooms

use the pans under to melt cheese, or make mini ommelettes with small amounts of beaten egg.
Passatta also warms nicely.

You can basically treat it as a BBQ.

We always have baked potatoes then scrape/pour the cheese into the BP. Also, wee bowls of
Sliced red onions
Sliced mushrooms drizzled with oil and thyme
Sliced peppers, sometimes with tom pesto
Variety of pickles/olives
Sliced salami/chorizo
Bacon to cook on top plate
Not the healthiest of meals but very delicious!
