I'm just about to put it in my slow cooker then saw its past it's sell by date march 2012, would you use it?

Is it tinned or in a vaccuum pack? Personally I'd give it a sniff and if it seemed ok I'd use it, but then I tend to have a very 'healthy' disregard for bb dates :)

Does it smell and look like it should? If it does, use it.

It is tinned! I never use anything past it's sell by date so im unsure, but if I don't use it I will have to go out!

It smells ok I think bug looks lumpy at the top, but I think that's normal Confused

Sell by, not use by.

When they sell tins I'm sure they know that people put tins in their cupboards and don't use them for years.

I have an actual coconut that we bought the last time we went to CP (we usually do a supermarket shop whenever we are in NI or UK on our way home). Which was summer hols 2 (or maybe even 3) years ago. I keep thinking that I will use it though - I just have to find a decent recipe idea!!

With tins, as long as they are still sealed and not bashed, the date on those is generally "best before", whereas fresh foods like meat etc are "use by". With coconut, I'd be happy to use it (I often use well out of date tins and dry packets).

Oh tinned will be fine.
I had a tin of peaches in the cupboard which was 'use by' 2009. They were fine.

Biddy, your coconut might be a bit dryer than normal but probably will be fine - after all, they have evolved to be durable so that they can travel overseas and grow after a reasonable travel period.

Use it OP. It'll be fine. 'Sell by' dates are just companies covering their arses. You need to be able to rely on your own senses to judge food - not what's written on the tin.

Coconut is practically an inert substance anyway!
