Cooking for one.

NettOlympicSuperstar · 24/08/2012 10:54

I'm on my own next week for four nights, as DD is going away with school.
I love to cook, am adventurous and a good cook, but I like to have someone to discuss the food with, and can't see the point when it's just me, in saying that, I'll eat nothing before I'll eat a boring jacket, or beans on toast.
Anyone have any exciting ideas to cook for one?
I'll eat most things (no peppers, jam, rice pudding or celery), and will shop/buy anything I need but have a well stocked storecupboard.
DD isn't fussy either, so it's not like I have a long list of foods I don't cook because she doesn't like them.
Help!

What I would make if it was just for myself:

  • Buy an expensive cut of meat (lamb chops), and have it with creamy mash potato.
  • Make an individual meat pie from scratch using luxury ingredients- best steak beef, chestnuts, and pecorino cheese or Lamb shank and veg pie with a hint of mint.
  • Buy a globe artichoke, and eat the lot myself with a dollop of mayonnaise.
  • Fry salmon goujons, and then make home made chips.
  • Steak sandwich ftw Grin

You can probably tell I really like meat Blush

Explore a different cuisine e.g Thai food. It's easy to make Pad Thai Noodles for one! Grin

Yes, yes to globe artichoke, and will make the mayo too. Also like the steak idea, I rarely buy it as it's so expensive and DD isn't that bothered about it.
Will do it with Heston's triple cooked chips and pepper sauce.

I've made Pad Thai already, we eat lots of Asian food.

It's not cooking that's the problem, it's inspiring me to cook for myself.

Any more ideas?

I'm think something with offal, as DD is not keen unless it's chicken livers, though she will try anything, and loved my ox heart stew.

Anyone have any good kidney recipes?

You're joking... I love cooking for one!!! Can be as self indulgent as I like :) I tend to go for things that are quick cook but lavish. Lush salads with a fillet steak/grilled chicken breast/seared tuna steak. Sauteed scallops with asparagus and noodles. Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on toasted ciabatta. I'd marinade kidneys and chestnut mushrooms in something tasty, spear them on a skewer kebab-style and serve with mashed sweet potato mixed with a little plain yoghurt and grated nutmeg.

Hummus with home made falafel, bread olives and a nice salad

Stuffed garlic mushrooms

I'm not joking, I like to have someone to discuss the food with, and unless I go entirely mad and talk to myself, isn't really possible!
I also enjoy involved cooking, so plainly grilling something doesn't generally appeal, but getting all involved for me seems pointless.

It's possibly good I'm addressing this issue now though, when DD is ten, rather than waiting till she leaves home!

It is her birthday on Tuesday, she won't be here (sob), but I get to cook up a huge feast for her on Friday, plus make a cake.

I've made falafel and hummous many times.
I do like the kidney idea, will try that I think.

I know it's not cooking but I would probably go and treat myself to a lovely bit of cheese from a goor cheese shop and some really nice bread/crackers and chutney, along with a great bottle of wine!

NettOlympicSuperstar · 24/08/2012 19:14

Cheese is on the list for one night.
I adore stinky cheese.
Not so bothered about bread/crackers/wine, they just take up cheese spaceGrin

So what have you decided to make?

NettOlympicSuperstar · 27/08/2012 15:26

Weeeeell, tonight is bought chicken pies with beans and waffles!
I haven't eaten that in years, and I really fancy it.
Still not sure for the rest of the week.
Probably a steak one night, cheese another and deli treats another, so not much cooking at all after that!
DD has requested chicken parmos on Friday, plus I'm baking her birthday cake and maybe another bake of some sort.
