induction hob?

I'm a gas girl - but am about to buy a new oven.

I want a six ring hob and a twin oven with, an inbuilt cleaning fairy.

Just been to a cooker shop, and they showed me an induction hob. I'd never heard of such a magical thing - quick, controllable, cheap to run, so flat! So easy to clean...

Anyone use one? Worth the money?

It's faster than gas, and very easy to clean.

I'm debating the same, have inherited a ceramic hob in my house and I hate the lack of control (although induction better gas is the best) but its so easy to clean.

I adored mine, in our last house, and miss it terribly.
Faster than gas - yes, really. Shock
And so efficient, as all heat goes into pan, none heating the air around it.

Within seconds of switching it off, from full power, you could safely put your hand on it. Still hot, but wouldn't burn. So, very safe. Also has a lock on it, to stop small people switching it on. Or big people who are cleaning it Wink
A dream to clean, as it is completely flush with work surface, no fiddly bits you get with gas hobs especially...

Mine had 9 power levels, so very flexible. And could safely leave it on level 1 or 2, knowing it would stay at a low simmer.

Only down side is that you have to use steel or iron pans, i.e. lightweight aluminium non stick pans are no good. But you can get non stick steel frying pans...

God, I miss mine, will have to start saving! Not that they are that much, ours was a Fagor one (never heard of them before or since!) and was great, never had any problem with it

We've gone from a halogen (ok not induction but easy to clean) to gas.

I hate cleaning it, it's so faffy and fiddly .

Get the induction one. I'm having induction one day.

I have an induction and a gas wok burner, I'm glad I got both - yes the induction is easier to wipe clean but because it's glass getting a smear less finish requires more work. I do like my wok ring, it's incredibly powerful and I can still use my favourite pans. The Induction controls are still bloody annoying, pans get turned off accidentally all the time and the bloody thing Leeds at me when I'm cleaning it - love it for its safety and responsiveness though and it will allow me to let the dcs learn to cook without them catching fire - the odd burn is still a possibility.

We have frequent power cuts, so am always glad to have a gas hob (also have one ceramic ring which is good for when the gas bottle is empty).

Induction devottee here, its great. Dead quick to heat up and easy to clean. I don't have the wok burner though so no stir-fries as such.

Springgoddess - I cleam the surface with a soft soapy cloth and get rid of the smears with a final clean of kitchen roll with a few drops of vinegar on it to make it all shiny again.

TellMeLater · 31/08/2012 09:33

Urban that was my point it requires two stage cleaning, whereas my old enamel hob was pretty much wipe and go, having to polish with vinegar and a second wipe to get rid of smears even after I have used an ecloth is what I call pain in the butt, I don't want to have to polish kitchen surfaces.

Induction is fantastic. Boils water faster than a kettle, I'm happy to let the DCs use it, and unlike some here, I've never found it a problem to clean. E-cloth and a drop of granite spray (granite worktops round it) or dilute kitchen cleaner and it sparkles.

The real advantage over gas I prefer is that is it really properly controllable - heats up the whole pan evenly, and is adjustable to the tiniest degree.

Induction is great :) Very responsive, quicker than a kettle, flat surface to work on. There really is nothing to not like :£
