Photo birthday cake from supermarkets

Hi, does anyone know how these work and the best place? I rang one up and they said just bring the photo in, pick up the cake from the shelves, take it to the bakery and it takes 15 mins (as long as the machine is working) but couldn't tell me what size the photo needed to be and muttered something about copyright. Can I just print one off the web and use that, or will they say no? I don't have much time.....

Thanks all : )

What sort of photo are you talking about i.e. is it one you have taken or a character, etc? There are normally a couple of sizes of cake you can choose instore and I think they fit the photo to the cake size.

An alternative is to buy the blank cake instore and then order a cake topper online that you can put on the cake yourself. I have ordered a pokemon one and a spongebob one in the past.

Hi Vodka, and thanks for your post : ) It's one of a pop group that I can get online and print off, but will they allow that?

I really dont know - maybe the person at the in-store bakery bit would be more helpful. Which pop group is it?

ImNot40Yet · 22/08/2012 18:52

Haha, it is the person at instore bakery I was talking to!!! It's Little Mix.... I didn't mean will THEY allow it (!), I meant is it okay to print a photo off the web and take that (as the supermarket mentioned copyright...how do I know if a photo has copyright on it?)

I've never had one myself but I know that friend of mine recently picked up a medium one from asda and got a picture of Disney Rapunzel printed on it which she had printed off from the internet.

It was a nice cake and only took 20 minutes to make up.

We've only done it once but it was quite simple (Tesco) - took in a regular 6x4 & the cake looked good & tasted nice too. Not sure about Internet photos if the quality isn't great, but if quality is ok, then that should work.

Sorry, misunderstood - no idea about copyright, sorry!

I wasn't allowed to use a Curious George pic from a book cover at Sainsbury's.

But I'm guessing it depends on who's on the counter at the time.

Big thanks everyone who's answered, I'll try Asdaor Tesco. And I never knew the cake toppers existed, so next time... I'll be more organised : )

I tried to get a photo cake printed and apparently Tesco aren't doing them anymore but it might be worth checking with your local store just in case.

Ebay do toppers with your own picture or any number of characters. Just stick them on a cake, a bit of icing on a cake with smooth icing to hold it or the gooeyness of the icing of it's that kind.
