DDm turns 3 in a couple of wks and I'm looking for an easy princess cake idea that I can make for her party. Anyone got any good ideas. Please?!

Make a big flat rectangular cake (put two square ones together if you need to). Cut it to shape like a simple crown and then decorate with pink icing and lots of jelly sweets as jewels. If you really want to go to town you can get gold dust icing sugar that you can paint on for a bit of glimmer.

Bake the cake in a pudding bowl (the sort you would use for steak and kidney pudding) Turn it upside down and put the top half of a Barbie or some similar doll on the top and ice the cake to look like a big flouncy skirt. Sounds complicated, but is actually a doddle to do.

I was going to say that slug. Smile

Otherwise you could make a castle. A square cake with a smaller one on top. Cut chocolate fingers in half and stand them up like a wall along the edges. The put a princess in the middle.

Castle is great. I used upturned ice cream cones for the "fairy tale" look and lots of pink and white small marshmallows for crennalations (sp), silver balls and icing roses to decorate.

I made a round cake and iced it with pink buttercream then absolutely covered it in jelly beans and dolly mixtures, with fake flowers and a dusting of edible gold glitter

kitsch heaven

my friend did the same but with meringue and it looked fab

Am seconding slug's idea. Foolproof and fantastic. Have a photo of the one I made for dd somewhere-- and the expression on her face when she saw it Smile

For extra girliness you could use white chocolate fingers.

Thanks for the fantastic ideas. Just wondered what you ice the skirt with - ready to roll icing? Do you cover the dolls top half with icing - does it stick with a bit of jam glaze??

I would think you'd be better off making icing as the ready to roll stuff won't blend into the skirt shape so well. It's better for flat surfaces. Make some pink or white icing and smooth it on with a knife which you keep dipping in boiling water.

I would try to keep the dolly whole and plunge her legs into the centre of the cake. That way it's more stable and there's not dismembered doll issue to scare the kids. Grin

Pipe bows and frills onto the skirt. The girlier the better. Grin

I once did a 'Princess in Bed' cake. It was a square. I iced the cake, made a pillow out of marzipan, laid a doll on the cake and put a ready-roll icing blanket over her.

I think i won't be able to help myself now - it was going to be v. simple, but with all these fab suggestions I'll be up until the early hours piping frills and pink things. Thanks!
