Freezing onions, will they stay crunchy

I have far too many onions and need to freeze them. I've never frozen onions tough, do they go soft or will they stay nice and crisp for my saladsGrin?

DH put some onions in the freezer once (no idea why he did this), and they went mushy once defrosted.

However, I have seen bags of frozen chopped onions in Tesco, so maybe you could chop them up first, and then use the frozen chopped onions for cooking? (disclaimer - I haven't tried this)

I freeze sliced and chopped onions but only use for cooking, not in salads

Thanks for the replies.

I've chopped and frozen half for cooking anyway, I shall use what I can for salad and then freeze the rest.

Have only ever used for cooking here too. Chop them first! Saves time later Grin

I chop them raw and freeze in icecube trays, that way you could use one or two or however many you like. Saves money and time, same for chillis or peppers
