What can I have for breakfast that is healthy and filling?

I need breakfast ideas that are healthy as I am trying to lose baby weight but that are filling.

I had a bowl of special k this morning at half 7 and I am already starting to feel hungry. I used to have porridge which was good but I can't eat porridge while the weather is warm and sunny. It's just strange Grin

What other things can I try?

Thanks

Muesli (sp?) Just make your own up I have found the supermarket ones expensive or horribele use the porridge oats with some dried fruit of your choice and nuts. Make up a batch of the mix you can use every day then. When you want to eat mix with some low fat or zero fat greek style yoguart and chopped fresh banana delicious and very filling and healthy.

flatpackhamster · 20/08/2012 12:21

Special K isn't healthy. It's marketing BS.

Granary toast and butter (not margarine), yoghurt with fresh fruit (whatever's on offer at the supermarket) chopped in to it, or with chopped nuts in it? A couple of hot granary rolls with a chunk of good cheese? Boiled egg with soldiers or a poached egg on toast?

Eating processed stuff and 'low fat' stuff doesn't work. Low fat is basically just added water and emulsifier. You're paying the same price for half the product and it'll leave you hungrier.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 20/08/2012 12:27

Poached eggs on toast. Two eggs and a slice of granary toast with a scrape of low-fat spread tots up to about 250 calories which isn't very different to a bowl of cereal. The protein and fat in the eggs will stick around a lot longer than heavily processed grated cardboard Special K

GobblersKnob · 20/08/2012 12:29

Everything flatpackhamster said.

Special K is just air and fluff. We are odd in Europe and the US that we have breakfast cereals. Think what fills you up at other meals and have that instead.
When I was in Thailand I was having noodles and chicken/prawns and veg for breakfast.

TeaBrick · 20/08/2012 12:31

We have porridge every day, whatever the weather, ds loves it!

You could do a sort of muesli, mix a grated apple with porridge oats and dried fruit of your choice together and add plenty of milk, stir well and leave in the frigde overnight. In the morning top with berries and eat, lovely.

BornToFolk · 20/08/2012 12:33

I was going to suggest what susiegrapevine already has - muesli with plain yoghurt and chopped banana. Really filling. I like it with a few berries too. I buy a no added sugar muesli.

Or what about Bircher Muesli? It's basically muesli that you soak overnight. I used to make my own mix, using porridge oats as a base then adding whatever dried fruit/nuts/seeds I fancied (or what was on special offer!) Soak overnight in skimmed milk then add fresh fruit and yoghurt in the morning. It's really good if you mix in grated apple - yum!

Fibre and protein are what will make you feel full, base your breakfast around those and you'll keep going a lot longer than you will on a bowl of cereal.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 20/08/2012 12:35

You need less carbs and more protein for breakfast.

Also, if you are trying to lose weight eat more at breakfast, not less. A filling breakfast will help you eat healthier for the rest of the day.

Poached eggs really are a winner. I had two slices of toast with four eggs the other morning and then at lunch and dinner I ate less.

Losing weight really doesnt mean dont eat. Eat more of the proper foods and cut out crap :)

I can't do muesli. Just the thought of it makes me feel sick. This is why I struggle. I don't like any sort of dried fruit and muesli looks like bird food.

Special K and the Jordans nut stuff are the only cereals I like so that is why I have special K as the nuts are too fatty.

I will give poached eggs a go.

Eggs. They are the only breakfast that has ever kept me going til lunchtime.

Nuts aren't bad for you. They've got unsaturated fats which are good for you. Eat more nuts.

And eat more fresh fruit, too. This time of year all the farms are groaning with raspberries and currants and strawberries. In a couple of weeks the hedges will be teeming with blackberries. Go blackberry picking, pick about 10kg and use them throughout the year.

McKayz · 20/08/2012 14:15

I eat loads of fresh fruit already.

Maybe cut back on the fruit a little and swap it for more other foods like vegetables, grains and various proteins. Fruit's obviously very good for you but, in terms of 'satiety' i.e. the appetite-suppressing property that means you don't feel hungry for a good long time, it's sometimes not a great choice because the natural sugar & acid content means it can leave you feeling empty again relatively quickly. Snacking on fruit can even act as an appetite stimulant. Try reducing it to one or two portions a day and making up the calories with other things.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/08/2012 17:22

If you don't like muesli but do like porridge, try soaking oats overnight and then having cold with some berries or chopped up apple with a bit of cinammon in the morning.

I find that wholemeal toast with whole nut peanut butter keeps me going quite well too.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 20/08/2012 17:30

I agree with Remus. If you don't like muesli, but do like porridge, try bircher muesli. Soak oats overnight in milk (essentially cold porridge). You can grate apple into it either at night or in the morning.

A substantial smoothie might also work for you. Whizz up milk, fruit (if you use cheap frozen fruit it will also work as ice to cool), a bit of ice and a couple of large scoops of oats.

Full fat natural yoghurt will keep you a lot fuller than low fat stuff. A bowl of that with a sprinkling of Jordan's nut cluster things (rather than a bowl) would be good too.

I know everyone says eggs, but apart from the weekend I never have time for that.

AdoraBell · 20/08/2012 18:23

My favourite is yoghurt with freshly chopped fruit, freshly chopped nuts and seeds-chopped in a coffee grinder. The seeds give a lot of fibre (so I'm told) go lightly if you are not accustomed to a lot of fibre, and build up to about a table spoon at breakfast.

You could use low fat yoghurt, natural yoghurt, flavoured yoghurt, whatever you prefer.

MarianForrester · 20/08/2012 18:27

Beans on wholemeal toast. Those little plastic pots are just a minute in the microwave and will fill you up for ages.

Mushroom on the same? Big flat mushroom sliced and done in pan with a tiny bit of oil, seasoning, maybe herbs?

McKayz · 20/08/2012 18:28

I will try the soaking oats too and yoghurt.

Thanks

I have a pile of chopped fruit, then dollop a load of Total 0% yoghurt on top, then sprinkle over some of those 'mixes' you get of flaxseeds, nuts, linseed etc from Holland and Barrett. I also pop on almonds as I am a nut fiend. It really keeps you stuffed for ages!
