Very easy buffet ideas

Can anyone give me some ideas of what to serve at a buffet for 12 adults and 4 children? I'd like to give a bit of variety but make it very easy on myself! I'm no Nigella and I don't think I've ever cooked for more than 5.

A couple of cold meats - whole roast chicken/beef, nice breads, cheese board/crackers, quiche, pizza, salad bowls, coleslaw, pasta, nice crisps, nuts/pretzels, some cakes... gateaux/cheesecakes etc, some bits for the kids like biscuits/mini rolls/sweets?

A few ideas that can all be done in advance...

  1. Make a potato/pasta salad with pesto, peas and cherry tomatoes. If you don't fancy making the pesto yourself then buy a decent one. Mix it up while the potatoes/pasta are still warm from cooking so the dressing is better absorbed.
  1. Things on cocktail sticks - e.g. a cube of mozzarella, a cherry tomato and a basil leaf. Looks very pretty.
  1. A massive cheese board with crackers, grapes etc
  1. Quiches - if you want a really easy life, buy them; if you want a semi easy life, buy the crusts and make the filling
  1. Sandwiches. It sounds a bit silly but at the buffet for my Dad's funeral - which had a huge array of wonderful food - these were actually the first thing to go. Decent bread, decent fillings. Perhaps people like something that looks familiar and that they can eat easily?!
  1. A fruit salad - easy at this time of year with all the wonderful berries, melons, etc.
  1. Crusty bread with various dips - hummus, tzatziki, guacamole, etc. Easy to make yourself the day before but if you can't be bothered then, again, just pick up the decent ones at the supermarket

I think when it comes to a buffet the key is to have lots of different colours, textures, and of course flavours so it will look very visually appealing as well as being delicious!

They look good but fiddly. I might do a trial run. Bizarrely we have a cupboard full of cocktail sticks thanks to my OH who uses them as toothpicks and a fridge full of tomatoes. Thanks everybody for your suggestions. Going to make a list and hit the shops tomorrow pm.
