New school term approaching and I'm on a mission to make the dc's snacks as healthy as possible. 3 growing boys aged 7,5 and 2 who are eating me out of house and home. So far my healthy snacks are: fruit, fruit kebabs, rice cakes, oatcakes, humous and crudités or breadsticks.
What are the healthy snacks in your house ?

Oh yes and raisins/dried fruit but they barely touch the sides of their hunger Grin

Malt loaf, banana loaf, flapjacks, mini savoury muffins, slices of apple with peanut butter, cheese and crackers, smoothies, fruit & nut mix. I love to bake so make all cakes and bakes myself, cheaper and taste better than supermarket stuff, plus I can control what goes in it.

Savoury muffins sound great. I see a big batch being cooked and frozen coming on Smile

Snacks in our house are typically just smaller versions of meals if that makes sense - granola, sandwiches, leftovers (I often make extra just for this purpose - everyone seems to head straight for the fridge when they get in the house)

I also make my own version of nakd bars - basically whizzed up dried fruits, nuts and spices in the food processor - which are very filling and good alternative to choc bars.

Seeded breadsticks
Cheese cubes
Fruit
Buttered crackers
Unsalted nuts
Cheese scones
Sunflower and pumpkin seeds
Slices of buttered malt loaf
Small bowls of dry museli

(I'm keen on adding fats and protein to carbs to help fill the kids up and avoid crashes in blood sugar levels)

I know what you mean chezchaos, my goal is to try and avoid anything with refined sugar in as it just makes them grumpy and doesn't fill them up. Home made nakd bars sound good. I've made home made flap jack with loads of seeds in and they loved that.

Does anyone know of any good savoury muffin recipes?

I don't really have much to add tbh mine love cheese, rice cakes, bread sticks, veg sticks, fruit, fruit flakes, raisins, quorn/meat slices....the usual....

Toasted chickpeas.
Drain a tin of chickpeas & pat them dry.
Mix with a small glug of olive oil and a shake or two of smoked paprika & cumin or whatever you can find.
Bake in a hot oven for about 40 minutes.

Toasted chickpeas sound amazing. I'm hungry now Grin

I use this recipe for my savoury muffins -

175g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda
Pinch of salt/pepper
50ml milk
1 egg
100ml vegetable oil
75g grated cheddar
Onion/leeks/carrots/courgettes/broccoli/sweetcorn/whatever veg you fancy chucking in!

Popcorn!

Not a typical muffin recipe, but we use this
VERY VEGGIE MUFFINS
4oz courgette (grated)
4 oz sweet potato (grated)
4 oz Parmesan cheese (grated)
2 1/2 to 3 oz fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs
1 tbsp plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp water

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 deg F ( 180 deg C)
  2. Soften the vegetables by simmering in a little water for 2-3 minutes, then drain and pat dry.
  3. Mix all the ingredients thoroughly in a bowl
  4. Spoon the mixture into a greased mini muffin tin or mini muffin cases.
  5. Place in the oven and bake for around 20 minutes until golden.

They freeze well also

Courgette muffins very similar to above - hide a cherry tomato on the middle before cooking for a surprise middle!

And banana muffins but I use very very ripe bananas and half the sugar.

Loving some of the other ideas

summerintherosegarden please can you tell us the recipe for your home made nakd bars, they sound great!

summerintherosegarden · 16/08/2012 19:14

Sure! I basically do 50% dried fruit 50% nuts so... for example... 'pecan pie' flavour is 200g dates and 200g pecans with cinnamon and ginger.
'Apple pie' is 100g dried apple, 100g raisins, 200g cashews, again with cinnamon and ginger.
Use whatever fruits and nuts you like, you will get an idea pretty quickly on your favourite flavour combos. You can also use oats in place of half of the nuts if you want more carbs and less fat.

Whizz it all up in the food processor. Scoop out the resultant splodge onto a piece of clingfilm on your counter and flatten it down. Top with more clingfilm and then stick it in the fridge for a couple of hours, at which point it should be easy to cut up into bars. Enjoy!

Oh thank you ever so much (its fizzy btw, just namechanged!)
I am going to try them tomorrow!
