wine

or soak them in brandy in a Kilner jar -add a little sugar and some almonds.

one other thing. some of them have brown scaley patches but only on the skins. if i stew them and remove the skins will the fruit inside be alright?

Give them to me Grin Envy

Make chutney?
Stone them and freeze the plum halves in freezer bags- putting enough in each bag for a pudding size portion. Stew or put in crumble from frozen
Plum purée is lovely with ice cream...

OP posts:
Runningblue · 14/08/2012 20:03

Yes, absolutely, stone them, freeze in halves then you have a nice easy pudding cooking them from frozen

mumnosGOLDisbest · 14/08/2012 22:03

You HAVE to try plum sorbet! I just made some and it was amazing. You don't have to chop up the plums AND you don't need an icecream maker.

Take 750g ripe plums, 500ml boiling water, 500g caster sugar and a cinnamon stick and optional vanilla pod.

Dissolve the sugar in the boiling water in a saucepan, then add the other ingredients. Simmer gently for ten minutes then leave to cool. Remove the stones from the plums and whizz the mixture in a blender. Freeze in a tupperware box, taking it out and beating with a fork once every hour for 4 hours

But if you do have an icecream machine I strongly recommend you stir together 200ml each of double cream and milk with 140g caster sugar and stick it in the machine. If you serve some with the plum sorbet you have a sort of British countryside Solero and it's delicious.

Also Nigella has a recipe for Chinese plum sauce in her Domestic Goddess book which is very nice.

So far I've mad a lovely plum crumble and disasterous runny jam which still tastes lovely . I'm wondering which to try next?
I have everything in for the sorbet but need a day when I can keep going back to it.

If I never see another plum I'll be happy best not look out my window in the morning I have chopped and stoned far too many! We now have chutney and liqueur in the store cupboard, 2 freezer draws full, crumble, jam(ish) and sorbet. Phew!
Thanks everyone and feel free to dip in! :)

If you get stumped by the next batch, you could try drying them. If they're sweet they'll make lovely snacks. Halve them and pop them in a dehydrator or a very low oven, or make fruit leather. Just whiz in a blender/food processor and pour out onto parchment and let dry in a low oven or dehydrator. No need to peel, just pit. Will take hours and hours to actually dry but it's low-fuss, and so worth it!

mumnosGOLDisbest · 17/08/2012 10:57

ooh another idea! i might peep out the window at some point and see whats left on the tree. thanks :)

Sorry to crash but the Good Food spiced plum recipe - is the fruit weight prepared or with stone in?
