Dairy free toast topper ideas.

Have a dairy free 1 year old. He quite likes crackers and cracker bread but I don't know what to put on them!
He likes nut butters, hummus and a bit of jam occasionally.
I was thinking of whizzing up some salmon mixing it with some dairy free mayo and chives or something into a pate type thing?
Could work in a jacket too?
Any ideas welcome.

I don't know if these things contain traces of dairy, but ones that spring to mind: baked beans
marmite (for when he's older, I guess the salt content is a bit high for him atm?)
sliced banana
shredded ham (jacket potatoes)
mashed avocado (maybe add chopped tomatoes with a tiny bit of lime juice?)
warmed chopped tomatoes (out of a tin - surprisingly tasty, was a cheap meal by DM used to do)

Salsa, taramasalata.

Any cooked beans or lentils can be whizzed up in a food processor with a little oil or other ingredients to make a hummus-style vegetarian pate. I most often do red lentils (cooked in a little veg stock) blended with a few sun-dried tomatoes in oil. The DCs have had that as a sandwich filling since they were little, and I really like it on oatcakes.

Definitely try avocado!
My dc do normally have pâté I should get some.
exexpat I love the sound of that lentil salmon mix.

Thanks everyone.

tomatoes, mushrooms, banana, tuna?

My DC love broad beans and we often have a glut of them to use up so I make a broad bean paste which is really nice on crostini or oatcakes

Cook the broad beans, peel away the grey outer skin and mash them using a potato masher. Add a bit of garlic, olive oil and lemon (and for adults salt and black pepper) and then spread on toast etc.

Keeps really well in the fridge in a jar as well.

Mashed banana. It's my Dairy free DS3's favourite. (He's 18mo).

For lunchtime sandwiches, his favourite is mashed avocado, a few prawns and seafood sauce, all mixed together. Coleman's seafood sauce is dairy & soy free (DS3 also allergic to soy and nuts).

seabuckthorn · 12/08/2012 19:35

Thanks for that broad bean recipe sounds really good, I'll be trying that one for us as well as DS2!
I will try mashed banana too.
Haven't tried prawns, though I think he would like them. We need to be braver with trying new foods I think.

couthymow we are soya free too. Do you mind me asking what bread you use? DS2 has had trouble with the dryness and crispness of some of the breads.
