Stupiod question I know but have just roasted some squash and am wondering if there's any reason why I have to take the skin off. Have tasted one with skin on and it's nice.

I don't think so. I wouldn't anyway!

edodgy · 08/03/2006 17:53

No, probebly not.

JanH · 08/03/2006 17:54

Wouldn't it be too hard to chew? Or does it go soft when it's cooked?

I've only used it for making Jamie's very veggie sauce so it had to be peeled before chopping, and peeling it was bloody hard work!

SorenLorensen · 08/03/2006 17:57

I wouldn't have thought it would do you any harm but it's usually very tough - akin to eating melon skin I would have thought.

WideWebWitch · 08/03/2006 17:58

Peeling it is a PITA, I made soup with it recently.

Gem13 · 08/03/2006 18:06

I don't bother peeling it - just slice the skin off. Probably a bit wasteful but less hassle. I don't think I would like to eat it either.

JanH · 08/03/2006 19:53

(When I said peeling I meant slicing really, Gem Grin)

NotQuiteCockney · 08/03/2006 19:54

I've never eaten the skin. But I always peel it off after cooking, not before. Much easier.

edodgy · 08/03/2006 23:09

Cheers everyone I ended up peeling the skin off, I've only ever used it in soup before and agree peeling/cutting the skin when raw is a PITA.

When roasted you can eat the skin, Jamie Oliver does :)

The onlyy time I don't eat the skin is if I am not roasting it. Too much faff to peeel

NotQuiteCockney · 09/03/2006 10:29

I never end up liking squash, except in sweet dishes. So I always roast it (but covered), then run it through a sieve, and then make cake or cheesecake with it.

georginarf · 09/03/2006 10:31

roast squash skin is yummy - eat it!

bundle · 09/03/2006 10:32

i never peel it, just roast with skin on and scoop out contents when it's v soft with spoon (when making soup that is)

Gem13 · 09/03/2006 10:43

(Phew Jan! - had image of everyone attempting to peel with useless little potato peelers!)

Piffle · 09/03/2006 10:43

If its roasted the skin is lovely and very good for you - all those beta carotenes :)

mawbroon · 09/03/2006 11:23

I've only eaten butternut squash once but will certainly have it again. I roasted it and debated with DH whether to eat the skin or not. I did and he didn't and we are both here to tell the tale! FWIW, I liked the skin a lot!

Furball · 09/03/2006 11:32

Yes you can eat the skin it goes all soft once roasted.

edodgy · 09/03/2006 17:41

Well next time i'm going to eat the skin it did taste lovely when I tried it but then I began to think it may be dangerous lol. You have reassured me thankyou.
