Protein for breakfast

Hi all,

I've read somewhere that a breakfast that contains protein is a good way to start the day, apparently just carbs (so my usual cereal or toast) leads to sugar slumps later in the day. The article didn't tell me though how much protein, what would you think? I had egg on toast this morning, yesterday was a ham sarnie. 1 slice of good ham, does that count as 'enough' protein?

Choose from eggs, nuts (nut butters), seeds, wholegrains, meat/fish, pulses (baked beans), cheese and other dairy products. A slice of ham if it's a thick one or a couple of eggs on a slice of granary toast.

An egg is great. It's meant to make you feel full for a while. I'd kill for a poached or fried egg.

I do a bircher muesli pot to take into work - in a small tupperware tub put in a small handful of muesli, some almonds and walnuts and healthy seeds, a chopped apple or some berries, a dollop of fat free no sugar plain yogurt (Onken or Greek are my favourites) and top up with skimmed milk. It's delicious and nutritionally balanced - protein from the nuts, yogurt and skimmed milk, a bit of GI friendly carb and a bit of fruit.
Either that or two poached or scrambled eggs on one piece of wholemeal toast.

I have 3 poached egg yolks ( hate the whites) and 3 slices of bacon every day. Yummy and is the traditional English breakfast too from the days when we weren't as fat as pigs.

Curlybrunette · 02/08/2012 16:28

Great thanks, I'll up the eggs then, I usually only have 1 but could easily manage 2 Grin

And I'll try the Bircher muesli too, it sounds delicious

Sounds a bit fatty but protein wise might be ok although watch those sugars.

archareastie · 02/08/2012 16:49

Don't forget breakfast cereal will have protein too assuming you have it with milk Grin . Agree eggs are great and filling. Or beans on toast? Peanut butter on toast would also give you protein

MsKayGee · 02/08/2012 19:23

Scrambled egg with smoked salmon on a wholemeal bagel is a winner for a filling breakfast.

MiniTheMinx · 03/08/2012 14:07

Kedgeree is yummy, as is smoked haddock with egg, grilled mackerel with poached egg, sardines, eggs Benedict, Smoked haddock with poached egg

I don't eat pork so English breakfast is off, good thing about smoked haddock and poached eggs is you don't have to stand over it while it's cooking!

Fat of right kind and protein good.

It's why we all got go fat - the US/UK decided to demonise fat about 30 or 40 years ago

MiniTheMinx · 04/08/2012 22:18

On the radio it was being discussed a few days ago. The Americans led the way on demonising fat, so people just ate carbs and sugars and they are now twice as big as before Confused oh well everything in the states is bigger........not better.

HappyCamel · 04/08/2012 22:24

Milk is protein. High GI carbs are the worst, the closer it is to white, the worse it is.

Xenia · 05/08/2012 10:06

Yes, it is the biggest change we have had for decades - the realisation that you are better off on protein and fat and not so much carb.

Curlybrunette · 05/08/2012 14:26

Happy camel - I hadn't thought about milk bring protein. The 12 cups of (decaf) coffee I have in the morning must do a lot for my protein levels then!

Xenia - that idea is the thought of the Atkins diet isn't it, fat and protein and no carbs?

I am mini which is why i'm called mini! I always thought I ate too much fat. I don't eat much in the way of carbs though, no fruit and mainly veg. I think too many carbs might actually slow the metabolic rate, although I'm not sure if that's right.

Xenia · 05/08/2012 19:11

Yes, although I think Atkins was happy with processed foods which would not fit with primal/paleo eating and his very very low carbs,no fruit is not going to suit most people and indeed is not quite how our ancestors for 1.5 million years age (we tended to help ourselves to occasional fruits etc)

There is huge progress on diabetics if they go for high fat, high protein, low carb yet most of what our children are taught in schools is go for loads of carbs, balanced meal involves a heap of rice, pasta etc.

Fab documentary on BBC2 recently called 'The Men Who Made Us Fat' going through the history of how fat was demonised. One man stood out from the orthodoxy and published a paper showing sugar was a far more dangerous foodstuff. He was pilloried by the industry. Recent research has proven he was right...and you just need to look around at the obesity crisis.

Might still be on iPlayer.
