Childs birthday cake. No fondant icing

hi,
I want to bake a cake for my DD's party on Sunday. I need to find a recipe that works as dairy free (I cook with pure and it makes a nice sponge) and which I can make look pretty but not using fondant icing as I find it is just too sweet. I am heading to the cake tin hire shop on Saturday, last year I baked a '1' and wanted to do something different this year.

Can anyone give me any ideas? We moved house last week and I cannot find my baking books!

If this is the wrong place then spend me away!

What about a Victoria Sponge? Yum!

I did a sponge last year, very good it was too, but how can I decorate without using icing?

something like this how about just a little bit of fondant?

Buttercream all over then a few little fondant decorations.

I never use fondant icing, I always use butter cream, so if you can make that with Pure, then no problem. Slap it on the top, or pipe it, and use other stuff to decorate - smarties, or whatever is acceptable.

I use Pure in buttercream quite a lot for dairy free cakes, it does need a little more icing sugar but makes very good buttercream. What about a giant cupcake?

Ok, I'm beginning to understand, I have an amazing cake decorating book somewhere, just need to locate the damn thing!
