Potatoes- am I just unlucky?

I bought my usual Maris Piper and they all had black bruises when peeled. Not visible on the skin though. You know how sometimes the skin is cut/sliced.

Had to cut/peel away so much, what a waste.
Is it the sodden muddy weather, are they being harvested late?
Don't think it's how they are transported though, I've never had them this bad.

I think the potatoes are a little less robust this year owing to the wet weather and that makes them more prone to bruising if they get rough treatment. Maris Piper have that 'floury' texture after cooking which makes them good for mash and roasts but could mean they are more prone to bruising. You could try a variety with a closer texture like Cara or Estima.

This has happened to me with three seperate bags of spuds over the last few weeks. Makes me squeal as one looked fine when i peeled it, cut it and the inside was just black mush. I havent taken them back but if it happens again i may ask tesco whats causing it?!!

And i had one bag of maris piper and two of the 'white potatoes'.

We have had this too, all three bags from Tesco's. Haven't had any probs with Maris Pipers from Waitrise or M&S though....

These things happen - it's normal and a natural occurrence. It reminds me (horrifically) of someone I heard recently complaining about finding a bug in their cauliflower.

I'd love to find a bug in my cauliflower - it means they haven't all been zapped/poisoned by heinous pesticides.

It's how it's meant to be.

But surely not to this extent. I moved two weeks ago and in my previous house i grew my own veg. Honestly every potato in three different bags just riddled with black rot, its not meant to be. Its a disease or water thats affected the tubers. We're not talking cutting the odd eye out of a potato, this is like black mushy rot all through.

Are the potatoes you are buying British?? As others have said old crop won't last too long but with correct storage they shouldn't turn to mush..
