Pink sponge cake

I'm making a birthday cake for this weekend and I'd like to make a pink coloured sponge. I had some red food colouring in the cupboard & assumed using a small amount may come out pink. So, I just made a test cake and it came out orange- how do I make it pink?

Also if anyone has any tips on how to make a nice strawberry flavoured sponge pls let me know.

TIA

Hello, you need to use concentrated paste colours instead of liquid.
sugarflair

The pink is properly pink, and because it is a paste, it doesn't affect the recipe of the cake.
Use very sparingly, the colours are intense.
You can also mix them with water to colour your icing, or dip a paintbrush into the paste to write with.

I use these all the time and they last forever.
Julian graves sell them, so do HobbyCraft.

Good luck, and please photo the results for us to see :)

Thanks norks!

I'd never heard of the pastes- glad I posted on here!

I hope my cake turns out ok- I'm nervous!

the good thing is you can always eat the disasters!
How old is the birthday girl?

as long as you put loads of strawberry jam in the middle, it will taste yummy.
Good luck.

I have always found that my cakes rise much better if I cook them in a tin with a paper liner (like a huge muffin case) and I use baking powder as well as self raising flour

i make a LOT of cakes!

Got the paste- thanks!

It's for my mum- she's 62! I'm going to do 2 layers of pink & 1 plain. Do you know if a Victoria sandwich is ok as a 3 layer cake? I'm going to ice it with buttercream mixed with strawberry purée. I'm a bit nervous as I only ever make banana loaf!

Thanks for the tip about the baking liners, I didn't know that either. Might have a trip to Lakeland this afternoon (I love it there!)

IT WILL BE FANTASTIC!
My mouth is watering and i am allergic to strawberries :)

Have fun in Lakeland. DANGER ALERT!

Wantomovenorth, if your making 3 layers you could always do a choco sponge, a pink one and a plain one, would look like neapolitan icecream, pretty. I agree with Norksaremessy, the pastes are the best, and i make alot of cakes to, got 4 to make and decorate this week, phew!!

I love that idea nannycook, thanks! I've seen the thread on chocolate Victoria sponge so I'm going to give it a go.

I'm planning on doing a layered coloured cake for my friends new baby girl. I'm planning on sugarpaste pink with ruffle icing. Prob flavour the sponge too.

As for pastes I buy mine locally in the 'in shops' luckily we have a good craft shop. The paste lasts for ages.

Unfortunately Julian Graves have gone into liquidation. Not surprised the shops were a poorly marketed and could of sold more items than players of nuts.

The liquid colours in supermarkets - Supercook? - come in pink now and it makes a good pink sponge and buttercream icing.

Shock at Julian Graves! Wow, I didn't know that.

Just be careful adding the strawberry puree to buttercream, too much and it won't incorporate properly and will split.
