Moroccan / Middle-Eastern dinner advice

Hi there,

Am hoping I can get some inspiration.... I am cooking dinner for some lovely neighbours in a couple of weeks and want to offer up some good food but obviously make it look effortless etc...

For main I am going to do a chicken tagine with preserved lemon and green olives, served with couscous and salad. Easy option as can be prepared ahead and slow cooked.

For pudding I am going to do a raspberry parfait and throw in some pistachios for a middle eastern angle. Also easy to prepare ahead...

For starter I was planning to just do nibbly things along the lines of a home-made hummus, somethings yogurty/cucumbery/minty, both for dipping with toasted pittas. I also wondered if there's anything else I could do that's a bit more meaty, given that one of our guests doesn't like lamb which is the obvious meat to use for moroccan or middle eastern? Wondered about some kind of filo parcel?

Any ideas for something to impress with at the beginning?

Thanks!

Lisbapalea, what about using something with falafal, mixed with some minty yogurty piled into some puffpastry tarts, or mix some chick peas with some harrissa paste.

Sounds fab! Can I come?!

Spanakopita? (spinach and feta wrapped in filo)

Ottolenghi's stuffed onions are amazing helengraves.co.uk/2011/01/ottolenghis-stuffed-onions/

What about some sort of mini kebabs, minced lamb or chicken. If you're doing a sort of meze starter and people can pick and choose, having one lamb choice would be ok.
