Mum I'm STARVING!

I can't seem to fill my six year old DS up at the moment.

He's very skinny - I think he's on a growth spurt. His tea tonight was cold roast chicken leg with lots of crudités and mayo, then two hard boiled eggs then strawberries with Greek yogurt and honey then two apples then two cookies but he said he was still starving afterwards! So he's now ploughing his way through a giant bowl of pasta. All for one meal! He's going to bankrupt us...

Next week he's doing a week long intensive sports course and he's going to be even hungrier... Can anyone suggest things for his pack lunch, snack and tea to keep him reasonably full? (I have already checked for worms...)

No idea nothing seems to fill my 7 year old ds at the moment, you have my sympathies!!

becstarsky · 18/07/2012 18:30

Claimed good to know I'm not alone at least!

Pasta, eggs, flapjacks, special fried rice, Frittata. And maybe a cheap loaf of brown sliced bread just in case!

bagelmonkey · 18/07/2012 18:48

Plenty of protein and carbohydrates.
Scotch egg
Cheese
Sausages
Cold chicken
Pasta
Flapjacks
Cheese/ham sandwiches

shrinkingnora · 18/07/2012 18:57

Start with the pasta next time! Seriously though, the first lot of stuff sounds delicious and healthy but really doesn't have enough carbs in.

becstarsky · 18/07/2012 18:59

Excellent thoughts - especially the extra loaf of bread! We are running out so fast, yet I haven't faced facts and added an extra loaf to the shopping list. He's eating mixed nuts with some chopped apple and apricots now. This is The Very Last Food we have in the house. I'm going to do a HUGE sainsbos shop tomorrow...

My six year old is the same. You definitely need to add more carbs though. His first sitting sounds lovely but not particularly filling. I stick a plate of bread and butter on the table too for meals that are lower in carbs and we eat a lot of jacket spuds.

shrinkingnora · 18/07/2012 19:02

Flapjack and really dense things like malt loaf are good when they're doing lots of exercise (the rowers I know swear by both of these things). Things like pasta salads and homemade pizza and quiche go down well with mine. I make things like banana loaf too as they are nice and stodgy and you can chuck lots of nuts and seeds and dried fruit in.

brighthair · 18/07/2012 19:03

I remember being like that and dad asking if I had hollow legs Grin
Thing like stew/casseroles/corned beef hash with extra veg and French bread to dunk filled me up. Then I used to have pudding - even something like stewed apple and custard

shrinkingnora · 18/07/2012 19:03

And potato salad - really nice if you give him some cold ham or chicken to go with it. Oat cakes are yum and really filling. And bananas. DS1 is eating us out of house and home too.

becstarsky · 18/07/2012 19:05

A plate of bread and butter on the table sounds like an excellent plan. And I think I should have put a jacket potato with his first plateful. I would have, but I'd only bought enough potatoes for the meal plan, then he and DH ate two helpings each last night!

brighthair · 18/07/2012 19:05

Oh does he like soup? That's good as a big bowl before tea Wink

Mama1980 · 18/07/2012 19:09

My ds 4 is like this it's impossible to fill him up some days. Risotto is good, jacket potatoes etc I usually give the meal then also put crudités bread and butter, etc so he can just keep eating. I know what h mean though ds has been known to literally eat everything in the house for the week by Wednesday. My dd 14 doesn't eat half as much. It doesnt matter what he eats either he is thin as a rake. Hmm

becstarsky · 18/07/2012 19:12

Oh, lots of great thoughts here! Really helpful - I am scribbling notes for the shop tomorrow! Next week he's got five hours of sport per day plus his usual swimming. Tip - buy shares in Warburtons now before I hit Sainsbugs Grin

Mine has always been the same and at almost 12 eats 2 or 3 times more than me. He is like a rake but never stops eating!

becstarsky · 18/07/2012 19:16

Why are these eating machines so very THIN???

All my three boys are the same and all really skinny.

DS3, who is 8, will happily have a very big bowl of shreddies, mini shredded wheat or porridge, then 3 slices of toast, then a banana and some strawberries or an apple plus a drink of milk for breakfast and then still ask for more. He'd easily eat another 3 slices of toast if I let him. (I have tried it a couple of times and he did) Then by 10am he's asking for lunch! He also eats a larger than adult portion of pasta for dinner.

It only gets worse too.My 16 year old will eat a huge dinner and then come down between 9 and 10pm asking for a 'snack' which is usually nbeans on toast or a pasta and sauce or similar. Hmm

brighthair · 18/07/2012 23:07

Some don't grow out of it. My dads idea of a snack is 4 mars bars. A meal is half a cow with a packet of potatoes slathered in butter Grin
He's super fit, with stupidly low cholesterol, blood pressure etc etc. I want his genes!

becstarsky · 19/07/2012 11:34

Shock They don't grow out of it? Argh! I think I'll need to do some extra hours at work to pay for all this food!

Although I shouldn't be surprised at all - my DFIL and DH are the same. Recently though DH has started to gain a tiny bit of weight around his middle - a symptom of being desk bound for 12 hours a day, I think. But considering how much he eats he should actually be enormous. Tis not fair. Although I suppose it is fair, because they're only eating when they're hungry - they're just hungry more than me.

I've just come home with masses of food - a giant sack of potatoes, malt loaf, two loaves of wholemeal bread, pasta, flapjacks, eggs, cheese, ham. This is to supplement the actual meals in this weeks meal plan! Tonight's planned meal is baked haddock with parsley sauce, leeks, carrots and a huge pile of buttery mash. I wonder how much DS will need to eat after that before he feels full....

For some reason, homemade bread is more filling then 'shop ' bread, so have you thought about getting a bread maker ? I have a 7 year old and she is always hungry, now I slice a loaf of homemade bread and pop it in the freezer fr emergency toast after meals!

poppyboo · 19/07/2012 13:36

The loaf I make is either seeded or 50/50 wholemeal/ white which I make I my Panasonic breadmaker.

colditz · 19/07/2012 13:37

Seeded bread with crunchy peanut butter and banana sliced inside, with a moderate sized chocolate bar and some salad.

becstarsky · 19/07/2012 14:18

That sounds like a great snack for him colditz. I was thinking of making him peanut butter sandwiches for lunch as they're so filling, but then remembered the 'no nuts' rule, of course! Dammit! But I can meet him at the end of the day at the playing fields with peanut butter and banana sandwiches for him to wolf down on the walk home, that's a really good idea.

Nice idea on the bread maker poppyboo but sadly our kitchen measures 2m x 2.5m, and it's really badly planned (rental flat) so we can barely fit anything in there. Also because I'm coeliac, I don't eat bread myself, so selfish as it sounds, I can't imagine baking homemade bread on a regular basis in such cramped conditions. Also it would be tricky if there was a lot of flour on the work surfaces - I have to be careful about contamination of my own food - if I get a crumb from DS plate on my plate I'm ill for ages. But I think I might start buying seeded bread so that it's a bit more sustaining for DS...

Make sure he is getting plenty of fat too-full fat dairy, mayo, fatty fish, avocados, custard etc. It is very satiating and essential for growing bodies and brains.
