Sweet potatoes...how to bake? How to serve?

Would like to try some sweet potatoes, but have never cooked or eaten them before. I think I've read that they don't take as long to cook as normal baking pots and have more taste.

So, how long should i bake them for and at what temp? (I assume I prep in the same way as I would for normal baked pots)

How would you serve them/fillings? Eating healthy, so fillings which avoid lots of butter and cheese dribbles! would be a no no!

Thanks :)

yum yum one of my favourite foods!! I cook them mainly 4 ways:

  1. wedges, just like you would make potato wedges, 180deg for 30mins ish in the oven
  2. crisps, slice using kitchen accessory of your choice, light coating of oil, optional flavouring sprinkled on (sea salt, or paprika or chilli etc etc), and bake on a high heat for maybe 10mins then leave to cool to get them crispy
  3. mash - just like you would for normal potatoes - boil until soft then mash. add optional mustard
4 sweet potato, coconut and chilli soup. Peel, cube and boil until soft with a vege stock cube (20 mins?). blend to a mush then add can of coconut and teaspoon of dried chillli. Serve with bacon sarnies. yum yum yum! Sorry I'm vague on timings - I tend to cook until I see they are ready rather than for a fixed time. ps lovely with lamb too

soo many ways

baked with cottage cheese
roasted with paprika and chilli and feta
mashed
as chips

they take SLIGHTLY less time then normal potatos but are more versitile!

I love baked sweet potato. Hard to say time as sizes vary so much but I would say maybe half to two thirds of the time the same sized normal potato would take.

They're really nice with bean chilli on for a healthy one (bean chilli freezes really well so good quick meal if you're a batch cooker - will defrost and heat in microwave in same time as potatoes take to bake).

i peel and roast mine as above. did try them as jackets and the skin tasted really chewy not crispy.

and i love them boiled and mashed with a little butter.

they taste sweet kinda like roasted carrots.

Baked, roasted, mashed, they are brilliant. DS was practically weaned on them because they were so quick to cook.

Fast lunch for me, one sweet potato wrapped in kitchen roll stick in microwave and it's done in about 6/7 minutes, split season.. delicous :)

We love them mashed with Philly and lots of pepper.

Wrap them in foil, bake at 180C, time depends on how big they are but you can test when they're cooked by pushing a knife into them. If they're soft and the knife slides in easily then they're ready. Cut them in half add a knob of butter and plenty of ground black pepper and a light sprinkling of salt. We usually have them with a green salad and a piece of steak or lamb chop.
