Healthy things to put on toast

Dd (19mo) loves jam which isn't healthy obv. She doesn't like peanut butter (also not healthy). We are a strict no marmite house as I'm pg and smell makes me feel sick. Any ideas what she can have on her breakfast toast to make it more interesting?

Honey, agave syrup, would bovril make you feel sick? How about some eggy bread rather than plain toast? Jam isn't unhealthy really as you're spreading a very small amount so I wouldn't worry too much. Why would peanut butter be unhealthy?

nellyjelly · 16/07/2012 09:17

Beans? Cheese? Honey? Low sugar jam? Pure fruit spreads?

AMumInScotland · 16/07/2012 09:19

A small bit of jam or peanut butter aren't unhealthy. Does it have to be something she can pick up in her hand? I was going to suggest something like scrambled egg, mushrooms, or tomatoes, but they could all be a bit too messy.

Honey is less "processed" than jam, if thats the sort of thing that bothers you. A slice of cheese or ham?

Mashed banana is nice on toast Grin

CherryBlossom27 · 16/07/2012 09:29

I second mashed banana on toast :)
How about

Cheese on toast
Scrambled eggs on toast
Sardines on toast
Philadelphia on toast
Nutella on toast
Eggy bread (sort of toast)
Baked beans on toast

Dropdeadfred · 16/07/2012 09:30

Peanut butter is not unhealthy - you can get it without added sugar

Passmethecrisps · 16/07/2012 09:31

I third mashed banana. We had that for supper last night - delicious!

tacal · 16/07/2012 09:33

ds has fruit spread instead of jam, maybe that is healthier? He also likes mashed banana. His fave is cheese with a wee bit of marmite under it or beans.

Tidypidy · 16/07/2012 09:43

Dairy lea popular in our house

NotALondoner · 16/07/2012 09:55

St Dalfour jam has no sugar, it is sweetened with grape juice.

Slainte · 16/07/2012 13:00

You could make your own fruit or veg purée and spread it on toast - I used up all the puree leftover from weaning days this way.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 16/07/2012 13:38

Why is jam unhealthy? Tip... there are no bad foods, only bad diets. If the toast and jam is part of a wider range of foods that includes fruit, vegetables, meat, fish etc., then it's a perfectly healthy diet.

SirEdmundFrillary · 16/07/2012 13:42

All the above sound nice.

If not jam, you could squash up some raspberries or strawberries. Or how about squashed avocado? Anchovy paste? (I wouldn't, but she might :) )

SirEdmundFrillary · 16/07/2012 13:46

Also agree with Cog above that there's nothing inherently 'wrong' with jam. I saw a gorgeous and wee girl the other day alternating fistfulls of egg with licks of toast-jam. The amount of jam she was actually eating was tiny, but she was enjoying eating her breakfast :)

brightonite · 16/07/2012 13:49

Mashed avocado? I love it....but admit to drizzling a small amount of olive oil on first and finishing with rock salt...perhaps not the best morning snack for a 19mo...;)

SophiaWinters · 16/07/2012 13:57

Agree mashed avocado on toast is lovely and very healthy, we mash it with a little worcestershire sauce.

AllThreeWays · 16/07/2012 13:58

savoycabbage · 16/07/2012 13:59

Thank you for all the ideas.

Dd already has sweet tooth so trying to avoid jam for that reason really.

Think bovril may have same effect on me as marmite.

And try to save eggs, which dd adores, for quick suppers after days out or nursery.

And beans too messy for breakfast which we eat in the living room usually while all getting ready.
