Need to start buying more of my food at Aldi

I have just done an online shop at sainsbo and despite having a list my food bill this week inc nappies is £80.

I already shop at Aldi for fruit and veg but need to branch out and buy more there.

Are there any products that you would recommend?

Pâté, continental cooked meats, Parmesan cheese, posh rigatoni pasta, some of the continental desserts, nice part baked rolls, chocolate, biscuits, wine etc. Cereals I've tried have been good too. Prices are good and it's definitely busier than ever with some v nice cars on the car park!

Bit of an Aldi convert here after much initial reluctance. Nappies and wipes definitely worth swapping to.

Easier to say what I wouldn't buy:

  • washing up liquid
  • some cereals, eg Weetabix
  • fruit and veg I'd normally buy singularly (eg lemons) or looks poor quality
  • some meat, eg chicken as its not free range

They're milk is cheapest locally and they're wine is not bad either.

There was a Bentley in the car park at my local aldi on Saturday! I think most of it is great, and cheap. Also stops me buying offers etc because there are none. I spend about £40 a week including nappies for myself and my husband. DS weaning so bought lots of stuff for that and got loads for not much money. Washing powder and cleaning stuff all good quality and cheap. I took the plunge a few months ago and wouldn't go back to asda.

My DP often moans that he cant get in the carpark because its 'full of frigging Jags' Grin

Nappies? I didnt even know they sold them! This is going to sound awful, apologies in advance, but are they comparable in quality to main brands or are they just ok but cheaper? DD2 gets nappy rash at the drop of a hat, despite changing what feels like every 5 mins.

Thanks for all the tips so far, starting my shopping list already.

I prefer Lidl for their meat, especially having eaten shoe-leather masquerading as a joint of beef from Aldi today and they've just added a fresh bakery so Aldi are going to have to up their game.

And am Grin at the Jags in the carpark - local Aldi shares a carpark with a brand-new Waitrose, have never seen so many RangeRovers congregate.

Nappies are good.
I used to spend an obscene amount on face-creams but I do genuinely rate Aldi's Lacura range.
If you use them, freezer bags
Own brand equivalent of Mars & Snickers

Everything apart from joints of beef, steak, frozen chinese meals and cornflakes.

The toro loco wine is brilliant.

The make up is good, I use the foundation and powder, the q10 calcium night cream and serum for my neck and chest.

The wrinkle stop for my eyes.

The macadamia nut bodywash.

The fruit, veg, chicken, sausages, beans, tins of tomatoes, the smartprice spaghetti (dried), the bacon, butters, cheeses, chips, waffles, frozen stuffed joints, frozen veg, icecreams, cat food, fish fingers, southern fried chicken, pop, crisps, biscuits, cakes, the breads, the chocolates, the milk, the eggs, the cereals.

Bascially everything.

I get joints of beef etc marked down in the local supermarkets though, top quality meat at half price. I lurked in the turkey aisle at 4.30 on xmas eve to get the turkey. Norfolk black free range for £25.00. I wasnt the only one either. There was quite a little group of us.

Theas18 · 15/07/2012 19:31

We have even had some very good slow matured / well hung ( titter Ye not!) beef from Aldi- though it was the seanoal large joints not the usual tiny ones.

We get almost everything there. Not coffee ( decaf posh brand ) or herbal tea. That's about it - wll apart from knorr cubes and cornflour which they not actually see

Theas18 · 15/07/2012 19:34

Word of warning re the lacura face cream though it's SPF 2.... That is not ok for e in a face cream ( am old wrinkly and fair skinned lol) so I've reluctantly gone back to what ever is on offer in boots / super drug !

Elkieb · 15/07/2012 20:39

Just read my post and it looks like I buy nappies for me and my DH! Just to clarify they are for my DS Blush

waitingforgodot · 15/07/2012 20:59

I love Aldi. I like the fair trade coffee, the muesli, big bottles of olive oil, cat food, wine, small cartons of apple juice, crisps, nice ham and cheese. Everything except meat basically. I do like their fish though. Maybe I should become a pescetarian and save myself a few quid!

sianc80 · 15/07/2012 21:19

We have a deal in my house that I do the online shop and DP does the Aldi run.

My, my he's going to get a shock next week! Mwah ha ha Grin

I use it for a lot of dry goods/basics that last a while. Baking stuff, dried fruit, pasta, rice, coffee - that sort of thing. And frozen fish/veg etc.

mercibucket · 15/07/2012 21:33

The chicken is free range!! And under a fiver too - so that's a 'highly recommend'
Love the jam
Cheese is overpriced imo
All the other usuals mentioned here

The luxury fruit and nut muesli is amazing. I tell myself it's healthy. It's probably full of sugar but it's bloody gorgeous!

waitingforgodot · 15/07/2012 21:39

i agree re muesli
