Can my 10-month-old DS2 eat what we eat if...

... I'm using normal stock cubes in things like home-made casseroles / spag bol / shepherd's pie etc. (obviously blended a bit for him!)

Or would that mean he's getting too much salt...?

He's happily eating mashed-up veg / meat cut into small chunks etc. and the odd jar of 7 months+ baby food if we're out and about...

Just wondering if I can start making food times a bit easier...

(DD and DS1 are 11 and 8 and I can't remember what I did last way back when... Blush)

Thanks x

I did, I worked on the principle that he had so little of it that it wasn't worth worrying about.

HappyCamel · 14/07/2012 20:52

I do, I think processes food is the worst for salt. Stock cubes in homemade stuff didn't worry me. We do BLW so dd ears exactly what we do and self feeds chunks or feeds herself with preloaded spoons.

You could get low salt stock cubes (or overpriced baby ones) instead for everyone.

HumphreyCobbler · 14/07/2012 20:56

I really dislike food without salt, but figured that as DD was having no processed food at all then a small amount of salt in a casserole or something wasn't the end of the world.

DD was my second child though, I was not this relaxed with my pfb.

JonesTheSteam · 14/07/2012 20:56

Yeah, wouldn't add any extra salt, so thought it might be ok...

I just wouldn't have the time (or frankly the inclination) to actually make home-made stock. And while I know there are low-salt stock options available my local supermarkets are fairly rubbish and I can't be bothered to search high and low...

Thanks! Smile

In that case I'd use normal stock cube for everyone. Ds will probably not eat all that much anyway.

GodisaDj · 14/07/2012 21:12

That stock cube goes a long way in chillies, lasagna, casserole etc and for how much DS will eat (of the whole meal) I wouldn't worry.

I use stock cubes but don't add salt whilst cooking (it goes on after, I love it too much!?

BikeRunSki · 14/07/2012 21:38

The salt content in Oxo has recently been reduced. DD (8 months) just has what we do. DS (3.9) too.

milkysmum · 14/07/2012 21:46

My 9 month old eats what we eat (BLW) and initially I was using the low salt baby stock cubes for everyone but they don't add any flavour so have reverted to the normal one's and I'm sure it's fine! I'm not sure a 10 month old would need food blending? I don't think I've blended anything to be honest!

JonesTheSteam · 18/07/2012 21:05

Oh I didn't mean blended to a pulp or a liquid or anything. Just whizzed until stuff is smaller or mashed up a bit with a fork. DS2 isn't brilliant at huge lumps yet. Chokes quite a bit...

Thanks for all the replies...
