help needed. making those wire cake toppers.

I've made some for a cake and despite leaving over night they just aren't drying.

I cant put them into the cake as they start to slip down the wires.

They have set hard enough for the cake to shown to the party boy but will need to be removed asap.

Any tips? Im making another cake for this sat and she has requested a feather and butterfly topper.

Did you use fondant? It really needs to be flower paste, rolled out a bit thicker than usual.

Have you tried adding tylo or gum trag to your fondant or like other poster says, use flower paste. I also push the wire into whatever it is, pull it out & dip the wire in edible glue before pushing back in & I try to lie the decorations flat to set I stick then in the cake.

HTH

Forgot to add, don't think the weathers helping fondant set Sad

I used normal fondant with a bit of gum trag. I'm thinking it wasnt enough.

I'm making the ones for sat in the morning and will lay them flat untik needed.

Todays was my first attempt at icing a proper cake. It was bloody hard.

Think I'll stick to fairy cakes in future! Grin

Have heard of people putting the fondant into the oven on some grease proof with just the light on & leaving overnight & the head if the light is enough to dry them but not melt them. Have never tried it though. Is there any way you could try this with what you've made. If you cant put just the light on, I think you can also put in oven at lowest temp for couple hours with the oven door open but dont touch it for the first hour or so cos think it gets soft before it goes hard (oo er missus Grin). Im on phone can't look on your profile.

I've just checked and the oven light doesn't work alone.

I'll just see how this one goes.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Your cakes are lovely! Love the blue star one.

MikeLitoris · 14/07/2012 20:57

Thank you fruity. Not bad for a first attempt!

I'm sure I can find plenty of people to practice on!

Flower paste /gum paste and one of the sponge mats to dry them on. Weather is not doing you any favours, for sure. At any time of year when it is supposed to be this cold I would say airing cupboard.

MikeLitoris · 14/07/2012 21:10

why didn't I think of the sponge? I just used greaseproof paper.
