Ingredient quantities for a non-standard cake tin

I've got a shaped cake tin but I have just realised that I have no idea how much cake mix to put in. How do I work it out?

Measure the volume (fill with water then pour into a measuring jug)then pro rata it to a recipe for a tin of known volume. eg volume of a round tin is (pi)

22x radius squared x height of tin=volume
7

sorry. Don't know how to do mathematical symbols on computer

A simple version is to get a round cake tin and line with a plastic bag (no holes) see if it holds the liquid to the same level. You'd have to guess what sizes to try first.

Cakecrisis, what shape tin are you talking about?

CakeCrisis · 14/07/2012 00:03

Well, I've tried my cake. The tin held three litres of water and a small cake tin (which I usually make two halves with) held 0.5 L so I tripled my quantities. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have risen especially well. I can work aroung the lack of size but I am a bit worried about how it will taste. I'm going to wait until the morning to investigate its edibilty. If it is horrible, I'll be back to the drawing board!

It will be edible, but the reason it didn't rise is because 3L is 6x 0.5 so you only half filled it. Just do it again, and fill the middle with buttercream!
