Fireman Sam cake

My nearly 3 year old dd wants a fireman Sam cake for her party, I managed a Peppa Pig cake last year by making a large rectangular cake in a roasting tin and using coloured ready to roll icing, fairly successfully but I just don't know where to start with this one?

Two options with this, you could either cut the sponge into a fireman shape, or you could do as you did with pepper pig cake and just make a large cake cover the top with fondant actually draw a fireman figure on the top, then paint him.

I made fireman Sams fire engine and accessorised with plastic figures. I'll send you a pic if you like although not sure how. I found similar ones on the net and kind of copied them; google search images of fireman Sam cakes. I think I used a couple of loaf tins to make the cakes in then cut them to size and bought coloured icing to roll out and cut. My 5 year old helped me make it!

I wasn't sure whether to do the same as the Peppa one ie cut out the shape and cover with fondant, or try to do the fire engine etc? I had googled and the fire engine ones looked a lot more work, much more fiddly with windows, ladder etc? Not sure if I can do it justice? I'm not worried about the amount of work, just don't want to do a crap job !

I made this cake when DS was 3 here it was very easy with 2 square cakes and sweets for decoration.

PS have to admit it wasn't as perfect. Best think is to buy a icing spatulla it really helps with getting a smooth finish, also you need the proper red gel food colouring normal red colouring will just turn out pink. Will try to upload photo to my profile.

Try not to give yourself too much work, it should be enjoyable not a chore, tey practising with youtube on by your side, thats how i made my lion to go on top of my cake, i hadn't made any fondant animals untill recently and tjat helped me out. Check out my animal cake on facebook under, nannycookscakes

Thanks all for your suggestions, the Betty Crocker one looks good with the sweets one, might have a go at that, nannycook you're right I don't want to make it a chore and actually I did spend quite a bit of time on the Peppa cake, I guess I just want to do a good job of it and dd to love it ! Will give it my best shot.

from cake central:

cakecentral.com/gallery/view/search/?searches%5B%5D=&searches%5B%5D=fireman+sam&album=-&search_user=

you may get some inspiration from here.

SandyChick · 12/07/2012 13:01

You could just make a plain cake and put a fireman Sam edible cake topper on. Or you could make a '3' shape and add some fireman Sam figures?

Some little cupcakes might be nice with the little edible toppers on too?

Just trying to think of an easy option. I'm
not sure how much it would cost to make a fire engine cake from scratch but m&s do a fire engine cake for £40 Blush

nannycook · 12/07/2012 19:59

Bacon, theres some good ones on there. do you make alot of cakes then? do you make them to sell?

nannycook · 12/07/2012 20:02

littlemefi, make your own, it certainly wont cost you anywhere near £40 thats for sure, and you enjoy it so give it ago.

littlemefi · 13/07/2012 09:27

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think I'm going to try making the 3D fire engine and go from there! Can I ask, if making a figure like fireman Sam in 3D to go on top, can I make it from the ready to roll icing or will that be too soft? Wow there were some great cakes on 'cake central' thanks for that link!

Yup just make the fireman sam figure with normal sugarpaste ("ready to roll icing) - I did this for my dd's teddy bear cake and it was fine. I made a fire engine cake for my ds's birthday.

littlemefi · 13/07/2012 13:26

Thanks cuteable, will give it a go.

Nannycook - I'm a home baker just for the family - not interested in sale even though I could prob do it, I struggle to see the profit margin, time and amount of planning that goes into them. I cant take on anymore stress than is already here, our construction business takes so much of my time.

When I do bake I go OTT and have published a few on Cake Central. I do find it expensive as I use top notch ingredients lots of coveture chocolate, good butter, cream etc.

Mine you buy the time you buy the cake drum, different coloured regalice, cutters etc it can be pricey but far superior to shop bought.

nannycook · 13/07/2012 20:34

Tell me about it, i've spent loads in the last few weeks, and yes it is expensive ut more than worth it when you get good comments. Like you though i do so enjoy baking for home but most of it ends up in work cos i'd be the size of a house otherwise, love my own cooking!
