Best frozen chicken nuggets EVER!

For those nights when you can't be arsed to cook....

Foxland Premium Chicken Nuggets from Costco are amazingly good. I've tried store brands, Birdseye, etc and never found any that didn't seem to be uniformly shaped rubbery crap.

These are in a blue 2kg bag in the frozen section at Costco, and I wasn't expecting much. However....

  1. They are actually whole pieces of chicken breast inside, juicy, and actually taste like chicken.
  2. They aren't uniformly shaped and the breading isn't as evenly distributed as most brands--they look like something homemade rather than pressed out at a factory.
  3. Nothing artificial in the ingredients, and the list of ingredients is pleasingly short.
  4. Outside crisped up well in my fan oven, only needed 24 minutes and 1 turn.

I am definitely buying these again.

the nearest costco to us is 100 miles away,Sad

I agree Yank.

I only buy these now, as at least when I dont want to cook a dinner the children are still eating well.

Don't they only give memberships to trade and certain professions?

YankNCock · 07/07/2012 09:37

nappyaddict, yes, but they don't seem terribly strict. I got mine by virtue of working for the NHS, but that job ended 2 years ago. If you know anyone that has a membership, they can usually get additional cards for about £15 a year. We did this for BIL/SIL and neither of them are working.

Lidls...much easier access than Costco!

They used to be in a purple box, but they also are real bits of chicken in random shapes. Crumbs are a little too orange to pass off as home made but they crisp up really nicely!

nappyaddict · 09/07/2012 11:02

Thanks, will look out for those.

bacon · 09/07/2012 13:17

Can you tell me the origin of the chicken please? I dont usually serve nuggets or anything in orange breadcrumbs, do they have that unique smell and odd flavour?

VivaLeBeaver · 09/07/2012 13:25

I work for the NHS, do I just go in with an ID card?

kiwidreamer · 09/07/2012 13:27

They are really nice, the crumbing isnt orange IMO just natural breadcrumb colour. From memory the nuggets are a product of Malaysia or a similar country... which does make me worry a bit, they cant have been happy chickens :(

SilverSixpence · 09/07/2012 13:36

Why do you assume they can't have been happy just cos they're from Malaysia Hmm

nappyaddict · 09/07/2012 13:41

I looked in Lidl and the only things I could find were Glenfells chicken dippers. Think they were around £1.50 a bag. Are those the ones Catsmamma

YankNCock · 09/07/2012 14:07

VivaLeBeaver, you have to join and pay a membership fee. www.costco.co.uk/membership/. It might be worth finding someone who has a membership and going as their guest to have a look around and make sure there's enough stuff you'd buy to make the membership fee worth it over the year. We're not going as much as we used to, so will probably let it lapse after this year is up. I will have to stock the freezer full of these nuggets though!

As for origins: They are a product of Thailand, produced for a company called Lakeland in Norfolk.

those dippers are good tho, nappyaddict.

Pooka · 09/07/2012 14:14

Agree - the premium chicken tenders (in black ag) are slow fantastic. Come with dipping sauce which I bin though....

kiwidreamer · 10/07/2012 14:57

SilverSixpence I would assume that because we have no guarantee's of the welfare standards they adhere to and yes I guess it is assumptive to say that their industry standards wont be as high as Red Tractor marked products but inhumane chicken farming is rife in a lot of countries.
