If so how are they different and what should each one be used for?

Yes. Although they look very similar they are completely different. Greaseproof paper is fine for wrapping sandwiches and cheese, but useless for lining cake tins as it sticks to cakes like glue.

Baking paper or parchment has a silicon coating which prevents cakes sticking to it, making it ideal for lining cake tins.

Ooooooooooooooh

Well I never knew that. That explains a lot of "why has it stuck I lined the bloody tin" moments.

Wow!

I had no idea, and tend to randomly buy one or the other which will also explain some of my baking mishaps!

So it's baking parchment that I need to line the tins. I must remember that - thank you so much Bunbaker .

Thats my new learned fact for today :)

My first thought was, about £1 a roll!

I mostly get Asda greaseproof/baking paper. About £1.50 for 10m. Not quite as slidey as posh baking parchment but not too expensive to use it.

Oh my.

My baking will be revolut revi much better now! Grin

Glad to have been of help. My auntie first introduced me to baking parchment years ago and I have never looked back.

I LOVE parchment!! I use it for everything including making my slimming world chips so they don't stick to the tray!

If you do use greaseproof paper to line a cake tin, you should grease it with butter to stop it sticking to the cake. Also grease the tin to make the paper lie flat agains the tin

I always use greaseproof paper for lining tins, never once had a problem with anything sticking.
