Homemade fondant icing - safe for children?

Sorry if this has been discussed before, I'm posting quickly using my phone so can't search topics very well!

Quite simply, if you make fondant icing using egg white, is that safe to put on a child's birthday cake?

Let me know what you think? A friend has suggested making marshmallow fondant icing as a substitute but would be pleased to hear thoughts

Thanks Mumsnet!

is a child allergic to egg?

I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be safe unless there was an allergy.

Confused

No idea if any children are allergic to egg at the party (could always check though) but was more a raw egg white in icing safe for children question? I wouldn't even have thought about it but a friend mentioned not chancing it today and I hadn't given it a second thought!

Raw egg (white) in the icing on the cake.....safe?! I would hope so as I know I used to lick the bowl! But times have changed I guess.....

Am guessing you think ok then? Children are around 3 mainly btw

You can get pasteurised egg white powder which won't contain any nasties if you're worried. Think tesco/sainsbury's sell it.

hahahhaha no, I just didn't know you put raw egg in icing!

Aren't all red lion marked eggs vaccinated against salmonella now? Probably ok but might be better not to risk it if children so young.

Thinkingaboutboden, why dont you just use shop bought regal ice so much easier and you can colour it youself, seems to be alot of doubt there.

Thanks for messages

I live abroad and can't get ready rolled here

Going to try marshmallow fondant instead just in case!

Thanks Smile
